TOP PRICES PAID AT 44TH ANNUAL BALTINGLAS­S SALE

THE 44TH ANNUAL Show and Sale was held on Wednesday at Baltinglas­s Mart experience­d a big entry of bulls and bullocks and an almost complete clearance of all stock on show.

There was a good demand for all classes and types of animals from the large attendance of buyers on the day.

The bidding was fast and auctioneer George Chandler kept matters moving swiftly for the many eager buyers, including factory, farmer and export buyers.

The quality of animals on show lead to exceptiona­l prices being paid.

Tullow farmer Dermot O’Sullivan, Ardoyne, won the champion of the show with his limousin bullock weighing 815kg and making €1,680. Dermot also won Class 6 for the best bullock showing full calf ’s mouth.

The Cronin brothers Sean and Colm from Grangecon won Class 2 for Best Beef Bullock with their Hereford that weighed 880kg and fetched €1,690.

Class 3 Best Pair of Continenta­l Beef Bullocks was won by Shane McCarron from Emyvale, weighing

662kg and making €1,510. Thomas Doyle from Kilpipe, Aughrim, won Class 5 for the best lot of bulls, weighing 360kg and making €830.

Austin Woodroofe from Knockanann­a won the champion group of the show with his four Limousin Bullocks weighing 585kg and making €1,300

Joseph Kinsella expressed his satisfacti­on with another successful show and sale and he said he was delighted for the local farmers that

prices were quite good in view of the current position with Brexit.

‘Thanks to all the farmers who brought their stock to the mart and for their loyalty to Baltinglas­s Mart over the past 44 years. We look forward to serving the farming community for many more years to come,’ sad Joe.

Next week Baltinglas­s Mart host the show and sale for heifers and cows on Wednesday, February 6, at 11.30 a.m.
