McGettigan honoured to captain her county
THE Wicklow Ladies may not have enjoyed the start they wanted but newly appointed captain Niamh McGettigan is still looking forward to the season ahead.
Having won the Division 4 league title last year, and losing out in the Leinster Intermediate final, Niamh believes the ladies have learned so much and are eager to progress their season.
Having made the long journey to Kiltoom, the Wicklow Ladies put up a spirited performance despite their defeat, while still feeling they can raise their standards even further now that they realise what is ahead of them
Playing out of the St. Patrick’s Club in Wicklow town, Niamh helped her club to the county final last year, before their championship run came to an end, but having been installed as county captain, she is confident the team can bring their game to the level required.
‘It’s an honour for me to captain the county side. It’s been quite a journey with the team and now I’m looking forward to the season,’ shesaid.
Niamh looks upon it as an incredible honour to captain her county something she did not envisage but having learned so much from those around her she is determined to grasp the opportunity.
Looking back on last Saturday’s game, Niamh said:
‘It was not the result we wanted but we will still take a lot of positives from the game.
‘We gave good performances in some aspects of our game, and not so good in others, but we are determined to build on what we have brought from this game.
‘There was a certain amount of fear going into the game for we did not know what to expect. This is our first time up in Division 3 so it was a real learning curve. We still learned much from the game, so much so, the girls cannot wait to get back out and take on everything we brought from Roscommon who are a good, experience side.’
Now that they have got that initial game out of the way the girls will not fear what lies ahead.
‘I’mhappywiththeworkthathas been put in over the past two years. Progress has definitely been made and we now intend to build on that.
‘Ladies football has made huge strides in the county both at under-age and adult levels.
‘It’s great to have the adult side going well for it’s an inspiration to the girls coming up, while the strength of under-age ensures a regular flow of players through to adult. It compliments both ways,’ shesaid.
Playing out of midfield, Niamh is now look ahead to the 2019 campaign with a degree of confidence.
