AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE

Congratulations to Genna Symes and Jane Mooney on getting through to the final of the ‘Certified Irish Angus Beef Competition’. The ladies made it through the second stage of the competition, by interview, last Wednesday, January 24, in Limerick. They are now one of the final 25 groups, chosen Nationally, to reach the final in Croke Park on March 14.

EGS MATHS

Congratulations to all first year students who competed in this year’s Junior Maths Quiz. It was a really tough quiz this year but the students made a really good effort with all the questions.

Massive congratulations to the following 10 first year students who scored very high results – Adam Harmon, Oliver Purser, Liam Murphy, Ella Olsen Byrne, Aran Cavanagh, George Tatty, Emily Leeson, Lauren Higgins, Daniel Donohoe and Ben O’Donoghue. Congratulations also to Anna Moelders, Charlotte Whitney, Niamh O’Neill and Florence Adaraloye, who placed Fourth in the SouthEast IMTA Maths quiz.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Congratulations to our under-17 girls soccer team who enjoyed a fine win against Selskar College recently. Goalscorers on the day were Abigail Whitney with two, Rhiannon Wynne O’Sullivan and Holly Jenkinson. A special mention also to Layla Souibki, who had a commanding game in defense and to Ella Jenkinson and Róisín Mangan, who controlled the midfield exchanges.

BASKETBALL

Our first and second year boys basketball teams played their second round matches recently against Coláiste Raithin. We had mixed fortunes with our second years winning and our first years unfortunately losing. Stand out players on the day were Oliver Purser and Jake Nally for the first years and Scott Fitzpatrick, Finn Fitzpatrick and Calvin Kirya for the second years.

The season has started for the minor girls’ basketball teams and both Form one and Form two started the league off on a positive note. Training has been good and this week they had their first matches. They took on Coláiste Chill Mhantáin on their home turf. Both matches had good sporting moments and a positive atmosphere was evident from the start. CCM were lovely hosts and the games were exciting for all. EGS were successful in both matches and the girls should be proud of their efforts. Marie Galligan, Nicole Cawley and Maeve Shorten were MVPs for the Form one girls as their baskets in the second quarter turned the match in our favour and the team found their form after that. Newcomers like Tori Ryan and Jane Neill put in a strong defense and offence play for their Form two teammates. As always it was a team effort to cross the line and individual players should be proud of their efforts.

TRANSITION YEAR NEWS

A relatively quiet week for our TY’s sees them drawing to close in their second set of optional modules and looking forward to their first week of community service. For the girls there will be the welcome distraction of a trip up to Dublin and the RDS for the I Wish seminar which focuses on encouraging girls to look into the stem subjects and career options. A big thank you to Ms O’Callaghan for organising this again this year.

Elsewhere play rehearsals are going well, only slightly slowed by the absence of Mr Martin. If anyone out there has any old shop signage, scales, posters or general shop paraphernalia from the 1950s era please do contact the school
