HOCKEY
The senior hockey team ended their season on a high with a fantastic win over Manor House School in Raheny. Despite it being an away game and the very cold weather the girls put on an impressive display resulting in a 3-1 victory.
Manor House pressed hard early in the game and were first to score. However, DCW took possession after the goal and levelled the score-line within two minutes. The goal-scorer was Ella Healy. This was an amazing goal on the reverse stick, chipped over the goalie’s shoulder into the top left-hand corner of the goal. Definitely the goal of the season.
DCW dominated the second half of the game and had many scoring opportunities. The second goal was the result of a lovely touch from Amy Mates directly in front of the goal, after the ball was crossed from the right by Ella Healy. The Dominican players had but a single short corner in the entire game. They didn’t waste the opportunity and this set piece resulted in the third goal for DCW Ella, at the top of the circle received the ball from Captain Keelin O’Dwyer and struck it powerfully into the bottom right corner.
Overall, it was a great team performance and all players are to be commended for their conduct both on and off the pitch. Well done to Captain Keelin O’Dwyer for a job very well done throughout the season. The first-year game against Loreto Abbey Dalkey was cancelled due to a frozen pitch. Rearrangements to follow.
LIONS CLUB TABLE QUIZ
The Lions Club will hold a table quiz as a fundraiser for Dominican College on Wednesday, February 6, at 8.30 p.m. in the Whistlers Bar. There is a cost €40 for a table of four. Come with a team or come individually and join a team on the night. It promises to be a fun night out
TRANSITION YEAR BANK
On Tuesday, January 29, Kian Doyle, a representative from the bank of Ireland came into the school to talk to the Transition Year students about setting up this year’s school bank.
Every year students from Transition Year run the school bank and meet with the account holders at lunch once a week. The idea behind the bank is to instil the practice of lifelong saving from an early age. Kian discussed all the jobs involved, detailing the criteria for each role. The interviews for these positions take place at the end of this week and are open to all interested Transition Year students.
Money will be donated to the school for every new account opened. One hundred accounts equates to €1,000 for the school, a great incentive for students without a savings account to open one through the school.
TREE OF HOPE
Wellbeing is now an integral part of the curriculum in all schools. This year one particular enterprise group integrated wellbeing into their project.
Leah Byrne and Emma Kristiansen designed little ‘Bags of Hope and Happiness’ for both adults and children. Symbolic objects with cards explaining their meaning were placed inside the decorative bags. For example some bags contained feathers as a reminder of loved ones in heaven keeping watch over them. Other bags contained little eyes to remind oneself to open our eyes to all opportunities.
The bags sold well and the girls donated a percentage of their profit to purchase ‘The tree of Hope’ which was planted this week in the courtyard where the students lunch.
The tree is a focal point for contemplation and the girls have also organised a rock garden surrounding the tree where students and staff may place a rock inscribed with the name of a loved one that has passed on. Thanks to Emma and Leah for their thoughtful gift.
MOCK EXAMS
The third year Home Economics students completed their mock practical exam this week. The students had to demonstrate their culinary skills by preparing, cooking and serving dishes suitable for various occasions.
Written work supporting their choice of dishes followed the design brief process. The girls learnt a lot about time management which will be invaluable for their forthcoming Junior Cert Practical exam.
The written mock exams for all third and sixth year students begin on February 6 and conclude on the 15th. The midterm break runs from February 18 to February 22 inclusive. We wish all our exam students the very best of luck and hope that all their hard work will be rewarded.
BASKETBALL
The first year basketball team played their second game of the season this week. It was an away game against a second team from St Mary’s College Arklow. An impressive team performance led to a convincing win. Congratulations to Abbie O’Brien, who was our top scorer with 12 points. Abbie Bolger was close behind with a total of eight points. Well done to all players and many thanks to St Mary’s for hosting.
EQUESTRIAN NEWS
The Dominican equestrian team are busy preparing for their next event which takes place on Sunday, February 17, Thankfully the girls don’t have far to travel this time as the competition takes place in Boswell Equestrian centre in Ashford. Boswell equestrian opened in 2005 and has already established its reputation alongside the best competition and training locations across Europe. If you are free why not check out the facilities and support the girls on the 17th. Competition starts at 9.30 a.m. and runs till approximately 2.30 p.m/3 p.m.
ACTIVE SCHOOLS MONTH
Another great week of activities took place in DCW this week as the students and staff embraced the healthy school challenge. A wide range of activities got us moving this week including Ms Waddens challenging boot camp, trampoline and a mammoth just dance session featuring over 200 students and staff. A highly competitive penalty shoot-out took place on Thursday at lunch-time. With the male members of staff in goals this was always going to be a popular activity. Great fun was had by the all even if the staff were left a little battered and bruised. Once again Ms Gaffney helped create a sense of serenity on Friday as she led a mindfulness session over the intercom.
Next week activities include yoga, samba, trampoline and much more. All students who complete an activity are given a token and presently our first and second year students are locked in a close race to see who is the most active class. With two weeks to go it is anyone’s battle to win. Get active and help your class win the fun prize.
