NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

Our under-11s played a friendly last Friday evening in Ashford against the local side and we thank them and Paul Conyard for organising the game. Our 12’s and 13’s were due to play friendlies on Sunday morning but unfortunately a frozen pitch put paid to that.

Last week we reported about changes the WDSL were making with regards both the SSG and the 11-a-side games but after the delegates meeting last week there has been a couple of changes. The small-sided game format will be up and running on the weekend of February 23/24 for the under-9’s and 11’s with 8’s and 10’s starting back the following weekend of March 2/3 2019. All these age groups will be playing every weekend.

Regards the 12’s they will start on the weekend of March 2/3 while the under-13s will be back the previous weekend of February 23/24. For the first few weeks these teams will play on alternate weekends but we have been assured by the executive of the WDSL that they will be playing every weekend soon after the start of the season.

Our under-eights, under-10 Red and Academy teams were in Futsal action last weekend and all three teams were in superb form.

The Academy team travelled to Allen Park in Aughrim where they played against their counterparts from Arklow Town, Aughrim Rangers, Coolboy Rangers and St Patrick’s. Plenty of good football was played and all players receive a medal for their participation on the day. Our under-eights were in Newtown and they came out on top of their three games against Enniskerry Red and White and St Patrick’s.

The 8’s squad included Bobby Spillane, Tyler Doyle, Nathan Donohoe, Aaron Nolan, Gerry Hoban and David McCormack. Likewise the under-10 Red team came out on top in their three games against WDSL Girls, Enniskerry and Arklow United.

The 10’s squad included Nikita Neaga, Dylan Dunleavy, David Mackey, Aidan Heffernan, William Valentine, Pat Carey, Sebastian Anton and Ryan Collins.

Regards the Futsal the upcoming times, dates and venues for our teams as follows. Saturday, February 9 – Venue: Aughrim – under-nines – vs St Pat’s Yellow, Coolboy and Shillelagh from midday to 2 p.m. Sat. February 9 – Venue: Newtown – under-eights – vs Enniskerry, Arklow Utd Stars and St Pat’s Black at midday to 2 p.m. under-10 Red and Black – vs each other, Enniskerry, Arklow Utd Black at 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sat. February 16 – Venues: Aughrim and Newtown for players born in 2006 (last year’s under-12s)

Our teams are all starting to get back to training for the new season from this week and new players are always very welcome to join our club. We will be fielding teams from under-eights up to under-13s and although it looks more than likely that we won’t have any older teams at the moment, as usual if the demand is there and players are prepared to commit to training and matches then nothing is impossible. Last seasons Academy team will now become this seasons under-eights team, though some of these players will be playing at the under-eights age group for two more years.

Our Development Squad practise every Saturday morning in the community centre Sports Hall from 10 a.m. till 11 a.m. All of our teams are now back in pre-season training. For all matters relating to training times etc for all our teams please contact our secretary Hughie at the contact details below.

We have four players from the club celebrating their birthdays in the coming week and they are Nathan Donohoe and Gerry Hoban from the under-nines and under-12s duo Dayle Carthy and Cillian Coffey. Happy birthday lads from everyone at Newtown Juniors FC.

Our second Last Man Standing competition of the season will start back on Tuesday, February 26/Wednesday, February 27, so if you would like to take part please let any of our committee members or coaches know and they will fill you in with all the information you require.

The club would like to extend their deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Teresa Keane (née Martin) of Springfield Heights, who sadly passed away last week. May she rest in peace.

For further information on all matters Newtown Juniors FC please contact the secretary at 087 6987653 or by email to hughienolan@gmail.com and you can also follow the club on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
