TABLE QUIZ
Our local Kilmacanogue Cardiac First Responders will host a table quiz on Monday, February 25, in Plucks to raise much needed funds. These money will be used by the Kilmac CFR for the Public Access Defibrillator Scheme with lots of these defibrillators in key locations around the community but the pads need chancing every couple of years weather they are used regularly or not and they are not cheap.
A team of four costs €40 and there will be lots of Raffle Prizes on the night also. If you would like to enter a team or help out in any way, you can contact Sharon Carey at 087 4161706 or ‘Lady Pluck’ (Caroline) at 086 2586762.
The event will start at 8 p.m. and we know the people of Kilmacanogue will give them the great support this voluntary group deserve.
PLUCKS GOLF SOCIETY
The first outing of Plucks Golf Society will take place at 10.30 a.m. on Saturday, March 16, in Powerscourt (West Course) Golf Club. Greg O’Donnell is the 2019 Captain and has appointed Jim Messitt as his Vice Captain. There are six new members this year which is great to see and members are reminded that they should have paid both their yearly membership of €50 and €40 Green Fees to Greg in advance of the outing no later than Sunday, March 10.
HISTORY LECTURE
Our local Kilmacanogue History Society members are eagerly looking forward to the February 2019 lecture. Titled ‘Stacking the Coffins’, it will be presented by Dr Ida Milne.
Dr Milne has recently written a book on the subject of the Influenza Epidemic of 1918-19 and she is a European History Lecturer at Carlow College. It is hard to believe that 23,000 Irish people died in this pandemic and Dr Milne has included first-hand accounts from people who lived through it and also how it affected the course of Irish history.
The venue is the Glenview Hotel on Tuesday, February 5, at 8 p.m. Admission is €4, members is €3 and as always.
FRIDAY DARTS
The William Hill World Darts Championship may be over but for the next couple of weeks, Plucks is the place to be on a Friday evening for competitive action. Colm Griffiths was in great form last Friday night and pipped Mark Quinn in the final. It is an open to everyone competition so come along by 8-30 and you could be in with a chance of winning a cash prize.
ENNISKERRY GARDENING CLUB
An item for our garden enthusiasts of which we have many in Kilmacanogue. On Wednesday, February 6 (tonight) Peter Whyte, Landscape and garden consultant will give a talk on ‘Spring Gardening’ at 8 p.m. in the Powerscourt Parochial Hall in Enniskerry (beside Poppies). Visitors welcome at a cost of €7

Where Are We At Now?: On the foot of Welcome Ministry Training that took place a couple of years ago, a seminar day will be held on Saturday, February 16, between 10.30 a.m. and 2.30 p.m.
in the Little Flower Hall at Holy Redeemer Parish to review where we are at with our parish all welcome. The day will cover what initiatives have worked so far for you and what didn’t. What stumbling blocks were encountered and what more needs to be done to support parish welcome initiatives. Anyone, who would like to attend is very welcome, as the first part of the day will review the training programme. This is such an important aspect of growing our faith communities and as many people as possible are encouraged to come along. To confirm attendance please contact Aideen at 086 8182241. Maritime history will be the subject for this month’s meeting of the Bray Cualann Historical Society, the local history society for Bray and North Wicklow, when historian/author Brian White will present an illustrated talk at 8 p.m. on ‘The Maritime History of Bray, County Wicklow’ in the Royal Hotel, Main Street, Bray, on Thursday, February 21.
The talk will trace the history of the five harbours of Bray, include stories of smugglers and reveal the development of the esplanade and the Grand Marine Promenade and the three Martello Towers, and how a how a church spire in the town played an important role in calculating pilotage fees for Dublin Port, the role of the Coastguard Station in Bray and various maritime clubs and societies including Bray Sailing Club, Bray Rowing Club, Bray Swimming Club, Bray Cove Swimming Club, Fishermen and Anglers of Bray, and Sea Scouting. In 1957 the lighthouse at Bray Harbour was washed into the sea, prompting the saying that ‘Bray was the only place in the world with a lighthouse for submarines’. All welcome – admission €5.
