Arklow host super night of boxing

ARKLOW BOXING CLUB’S young warriors, some as young as eight, put on a great display of boxing on Thursday night in the club when boxers from Rathnew and Kildare’s Setanta came calling for their annual An Garda Síochána sponsored tournament.

The Setanta club from Newbridge provided most of the opposition with local club Rathnew also involved with Adam Sinnott and Alex Dickenson taking on Jason Breen and Niam Molloy.

First boxer in action was Leo McCallion against Owen Murphy from Setanta, and what an exciting bout with both boys giving their all before they were presented with their medals by Garda Sargent Vinnie Byrne.

The local Gardai had kindly sponsored the prises as they do every year. Second in action was Oscar Reid for another hectic bout with both boys going flat out. Oscar’s opponent was Setanta’s Martin O’Brien.

Third fight of the night was Andrei Shoakov against Evan Connolly from Setanta in what was another lively contest.

Next up was Hunter van Barnevela against Brian Shields of Setanta and both boys showed some fine boxing skills in an entertaini­ng bout.

Aaron Mooney was next in action against Setanta’s Cian Potts and Aaron used his counterpun­ching well to keep the Kildare boy at bay.

Noah Hatty was in great form and used his footwork to good effect to keep Eddie O’Kane on the move.

Sean Byrne had a great bout with Tygh Doyle from Setanta with both boys attacking at will.

Jack Hudson had an impressive bout with Setanta’s Kyle Connolly. Both boys scored alternativ­ely throughout the three rounds.

Arklow’s Niamh Molloy was involved in a very skilful bout with Rathnew’s Alex Dickenson. Both girls are members of the Leinster developmen­t squad and are getting ready for the Leinster Championsh­ips.

Alex White was making his debut against Saoirce Donnelly from Setanta and both boxers demonstrat­ed excellent skills.

Reece Doyle was also making his debut, against Geordana Corr from the Newbridge club. This was also a very skilful bout with both boxers giving everything.

Daniel Feokrytov had an excellent bout against Ciara Brien from Setanta. Ciara is a European bronze medallist so the skill level was high.

Donnacha Murphy was next against Rian Regan from Setanta and again the skill content was high. Callum Roche had a great battle with Setanta’s Jack Fogarty. Jason Breen had a great bout with Adam Sinnott from Rathnew.

Both boys scored with solid hooks to head and body to the delight of the crowd. Cian Redmond also had a good match with Sennan Maguire, Setanta. Both boys showed good boxing skills.

Liam Molloy had a great bout with Ben Carroll from Setanta. Liam’s clever footwork was impressive. Tegan Farrell gave a fine performanc­e against Mary Enright from Setanta both girls scoring with solid punches.

Simon Hoey had a great battle with Tigh Moore from the visiting Setanta club, with both boys scoring well.

Darragh O’Connor was in with Ryan Connolly and it was a ding dong battle. In the final bout Daniel Fox was in action with Setanta’s Michael Lambe. There was some excellent exchanges to finish off a fine night of boxing.
