stroke of half time when Thomas O’Neill bundled the ball home. Rovers earned a deserved share of the spoils when a move involving Thomas O’Neill, Gary Dowling and Dylan Moriarty helped to set up Paul Marah who unleashed a 35-yard screamer that swerved and dipped under the crossbar to make it 2-2.

Considering the lads were down to the bare bones this was an excellent result.

Our under-15 girls played out a thrilling 3-3 draw away to Lakelands FC on Sunday.

In a game that was played in very windy conditions both teams produced some lovely neat football to entertain the watching public.

Justine Cronin and Molly Sweeney gave Rovers the perfect start with goals on eleven and fifteen minutes to race into a 2-0 lead.

The home side pulled one back to leave the half-time score 2-1 to Rovers.

Early in the second half Rovers restored their two goal cushion when Justine Cronin finished after great work from Aoife Caffrey and Molly Sweeney.

Yet again the home side battled back scoring goals after 55 and 60 minutes to level matters at 3-3. The Rovers girls turned in an excellent performance but a special mention goes out to Rachel Byrne who turned in a fine performance in the centre of midfield in her first game of the season.

Our second Last Man Standing competition of the season kicked off at the weekend with the top three selections obliging their supporters by winning their respective games.

Liverpool’s comfortable 3-0 home win over Bournemouth saw 37 players progress.

Another 37 players went through as their selection Arsenal beat Huddersfield 2-1.

Manchester United continued their recent good form with a 3-0 away victory over Fulham to help 23 players into round two. Tottenham’s 3-1 win over Leicester saw eight players move on to round two.

Watford’s narrow 1-0 win against Everton put a single player through.

Of the casualties that made their exit from the competition Southampton were the biggest as 10 players went crashing out after their surprise 2-1 home defeat to Cardiff. Four more players were eliminated when three selected Crystal Palace and one player went on West Ham in their tussle but unfortunately a 1-1 draw resulted with all four players going out. Everton’s 1-0 defeat away to Watford saw a further two players miss out while Burnley beat Brighton 3-1 which saw a sole player who picked Brighton depart the competition.

At the time of going to print another 10 players will be hoping to join the 106 players in round 2 when their selection Wolves entertain Newcastle in the Monday night live game on Sky Sports.

Once again, a big thanks to everyone who participated in our Last Man Standing competition and the best of luck to the remaining players in the competition. will be up and running on the weekend of February 23 and 24 for the under-9s and 11s with 8s and 10s starting back the following weekend of March 2 and 3.

All these age groups will be playing every weekend.

Regards the 12s, they will start on the weekend of March 2 and 3 while the under-13s will be back the previous weekend of February 23 and 24.

For the first few weeks these teams will play on alternate weekends but we have been assured by the executive of the WDSL that they will be playing every weekend soon after the start of the season.

This process will be implemented by the club secretary with help from all team coaches and parents.
