THE OSCARS

A huge congratulations to third year Coláiste Chraobh Abhann student Leon Hughes, who is starring in the film ‘Detainment’, an Irish film that has been shortlisted for Best Live Action Short in this year’s Academy Awards, which takes place on February 24.

Detainment is an Irish short drama film written and directed by Vincent Lambe, and deals with the investigation into the horrific murder of two-year old Jamie Bulger, which took place in Liverpool in 1993.

Leon plays the role of Robert Thompson, one of the boys convicted of the murder, and the film has become one of the most talked about films in Irish cinema history. Irish Times journalist Fintan O’Toole described Lambe’s film as ‘a masterpiece of economic storytelling, an epic in half an hour’ and for him, ‘a profoundly moral film.’.

The film has already won numerous awards, including the Cannes Film Festival, The Richard Harris Film Festival and the Irish Screen America Awards.

We wish Leon and the rest of the cast the very best of luck at this year’s Oscars.

JUNK KOUTURE

Congratulations to the under-17 boys’ football team who reached the final of the Wicklow Wexford League last week. CCA played a very strong Gorey side and both teams contributed to a fantastic match in terrible conditions.

Gorey went ahead, but CCAs star forward Dylan Fitzsimons scored a wonder goal to equalise, with manager Mr Hughe’s describing it as the best goal he had seen in all his year’s in school football.

The game was very tight, but eventually Gorey found a breakthrough in the CCA defence and took their goal very well. They then added a third close to full-time to claim the cup.

This was a great game of football between two very talented sides. Well done to the CCA boys for such a successful season and to the effervescent Mr Hughes, who never stops believing.

GIRLS FOOTBALL

Congratulation to the CCA Girls’ football team who beat Dunlavin last week. The girls put in a fantastic performance, with some outstanding performances in all positions.

Bainisteoir Ms Miley and Ms Doyle were very impressed with the team’s effort and commitment and are now looking forward to their next game in the upcoming weeks.

BOYS BASKETBALL

CCA Basketball had some great results last week with the second year boys beating St David’s in the Wicklow School League by a score of 25-20.

The first year team also had a convincing win against CBS Arklow on Tuesday, February 5, while the second year team fell just a little short in a narrow defeat against Arklow CBS, losing 19-16.

Coach Mr Creavin was very pleased with the performances by all the boys involved. Well done to both teams.

FRENCH EXCHANGE

CCA celebrated Healthy Eating week from Monday, February 4, to Friday, February 8. There were numerous activities throughout the week including talks from dentist Dr Kellie McConnell, and Ashford Physio Catherine Craddock, who spoke to the first years on the importance of good posture and developing a strong core.

Nutritionist Louise Sharkey spoke to students around the importance of a healthy balanced diet and the surprising facts regarding hidden sugars.

Throughout the week free porridge and fruit was given to students in the morning to ensure all third and sixth year students sitting the mocks had a nutritious breakfast to help them through the hard slog of the exams.

Thanks to Ms O’Brien and all the staff and students who helped organise this important week and hopefully some of the good habits that have started will now continue long term.

SVDP COFFEE MORNING Well done to all fifth year students involved in the CCA Coffee Moring that was organised last week in aid of Saint Vincent de Paul.

A delicious assortment of cakes, buns and other treats were baked to raise money for the charity.

Well done to all involved.
