Exceptiona­l trading at latest Carnew sale

THERE was some exceptiona­l trade at Carnew’s 38th annual fatstock show and sale with 1,170 heifers and cows on offer. The demand was driven by Northern Ireland factories and wholesaler­s as well as exporters.

The champion was Pat and Aaron Whelan from Baltinglas­s with their Belgian Blue heifer, weighing in at 724 kg which sold for €2,170 to Dolan’s exporters.

The show and sale event had a great attendance with people coming from across Ireland and beyond to see what was on offer.

Other winners were: Class 1 Best Factory Type Cows: 1. Shay Hayden - 1 Belgian Blue cow 846kg at €2,100; 2. Shay Hayden- 1 Belgian Blue cow 782kg at €2,000; 3. John Byrne 1 Charolais cow 872kg at €1,870; Class 2 Best Butcher Heifer: 1. Gordon Wheatley - 1 Belgian Blue heifer 612kg at €1,740; 2. Tom Fitzgerald - 1 Belgian Blue heifer 624kg at €1,790; 3. Tim Dunne - 1 Blonde Aquitane heifer 504kg at €1,300; Class 3 Best Pair of Continenta­l Butchers Heifers: 1: Michael and John Osborne - 2 Belgian Blue heifers 610kg at €1,630; 2. Paddy Keane - 2 Limousin heifers 607kg at €1,630; 3. Trevor and Andrew Minion - 2 Limousin heifers 568kg at €1,360; Class 4 Best 2 or more Non-Continenta­l Butchers Type Heifers: 1. Des Tobin - 2 Aberdeen Angus heifers 545kg at €1,150; 2. Des Tobin, - 2 Aberdeen Angus heifers 555kg at €1,150; 3. Des Tobin - 2 Aberdeen Angus heifers 494kg at €980; Class 5 Best Continenta­l Factory Type Heifer: 1. Pat and Aaron Whelan - 1 Belgian Blue heifer 724kg at €2,170; 2. Maureen Teague - 1 Charolais heifer 392kg at €1,100; 3. Maurice Wafer - 1 Belgian Blue heifer 432kg at €1,160.
