Wicklow trio shine

Farrell, Molloy and Rock secure victories for Leinster

LEINSTER gave Connaught a lesson in boxing in their female boxing interprovi­ncial in Arklow Boxing Club on Sunday.

A total of 13 contests seen Leinster come out on top by 10-3 and County Wicklow had two Arklow girls, Tegan Farrell and Niamh Molloy. Both girls used straight punching following up with some big hooks to win their bouts convincing­ly.

4 Kings Boxing Club from Greystones was represente­d by Kaci Rock who is daughter of the well-known boxer Jim Rock (the Pink Panther) who presented the medals on the day.

Rathnew was represente­d by Alex Dickenson who unfortunat­ely had to retire after twisting her ankle in the second round.

Kaci won the ‘Home Boxer on the Day’ award when she stopped Keisha Attwell in the second round, while Shakira McCrudden won best visiting boxer by defeating Caoimhe Kinsella of St Anthonys/St Pats Boxing Club Enniscorth­y.

Results were: Miah Byrne (Leinster) was beaten by Shania McCrudden (Connaught). Leinster’s Nicola Hayden beat Connaught’s Kelsey Langen. Megan Carthy of Leinster for the better of Caragh Murphy from the Connaught team.

Arklow’s Niamh Molloy enjoyed her convincing victory over Carla Connolly while her Leinster colleague Jodie Byrne Leinster got the better of Amber Nolan.

Ciara Walsh clocked upanother win for Leinster by defeating Niamh McNamara but the west province cheered when Ciomh Kinsella lost to Shakira McCrudden.

Leinster’s winning trend got back on track when Esther Lambe, Tia Athwell and Nora Jackman toppled Allanah Attwell and Chensie McDonaugh eased past Kym O’Reilly.

Leinster’s Niamh Duncan was beaten by Holly Connolly, but Tegan Farrell pulled Leinster back into winning ways by defeating Sarah Richardson while Greystones boxer Kaci Rock got the better of Keisha Attwell.

There were nine supporting exhibition­s on the day.

All organising for Sunday’s competitio­n was led by Arklow Boxing Club coach and Leinster female firector of boxing, Linda Morgan.

In other great news for Arklow Boxing Club, a team of 11 Arklow boxers travelled to the Holy Family club in Drogheda on Sunday.

Five underage boxers, Hunter Van Barnaveld, Leo McCallion, Jack Hudson, Aaron Mooney and Andrei Shpakov all boxed very well in their test matches against their Drogheda opponents.

In their decision contests, Arklow’s team of Sean Byrne, Ross Farrell, Philip Feokrytova, Sean Fleming, Josh Browne and Daniel Fox gave it their all with all winning their contests unanimousl­y in what was a great result for the club.

Arklow boxers are now in training for the coming Leinster and National Championsh­ips in March and April.
