BASKETBALL

The first years recorded their first victory of the year against Coláiste Chill Mhaintain on Monday, winning on a score line of 17-11. This was down to a dominating debut performance from Michael Gough, who came out of the game with an impressive 14 of Arklow’s 17 points. While Michael was definitely the attacking force the team needed, he was ably helped on defensive duties with Jun Jie Huang, Patrick Shaw and Shane Monaghan all putting in impressive displays. The remaining three points for CBS came from a Jamie Wolohan free throw and a Sam Kenny Basket.

The second years put in a brave defensive performance but their prowess in front of the basket let them down as they lost to CCM on a score of eight to 19. Despite some great defending from the team with Conor Gahan putting in a particularly excellent performance, the CCM team’s club basketball players were the difference on the day as they had more composure when shooting. Arklow’s eight points were shared out with a basket from Conor Gahan, two free throws from the always dangerous on the break Owen Byrne, another two free throws from the clever Seán Fox and a final basket from the reliable Niall O’Donovan. A win against St David’s might see the boys progress to the next round depending on other results.

MOCKS

This Friday marked the end of our mock exams for our third and sixth year students. The boys have had a tough two weeks as they sat their exams under state examinations conditions. They have worked hard and truly earned their mid-term break.

MOCK INTERVIEWS

Our annual mock interviews are fast approaching. These interviews are an important and integral part of the fifth year school calendar. Representatives from the school community and from local businesses sit on panels and conduct formal interviews with the students. These interviews are a great learning opportunity for the students and allow them to experience what a real life interview is like. and are managed by teachers Mr Kevin Murphy and Mr Kieran O’Sullivan. We wish them well in their next game and are proud of their achievement so far.

VALENTINE’S FUNDRAISER

Some of our TY students have been putting smiles on the faces of our students in the hope that the funds they raise may put a smile on the faces of young women in Kenya. The TY group sold roses and Valentine’s messages in BCC to begin their fundraising to enable them to participate in the CARA volunteer programme in Kenya which has a targeted focus upon Child Protection.

Through the CARA Girls’ Rescue Centre, women’s empowerment through Vocational training, Health Promotion, Education, Gender Equality, Economic Empowerment and Sustainable Development is promoted. The main aim of the organisation is to provide support to disadvantaged mothers and children to enable them to contribute to the development of their own communities and to the country as a whole. Our volunteering students hope to contribute to a building project in 2020.

The students are being guided by Ms McKeon and Ms Prendiville. One of our staff members, Ms Hayden, has volunteered twice for CARA and brings a knowledge and passion to the project for which we are grateful. has become a big favourite among our students each year and we are delighted to announce that almost €1,500 was raised for this worthy cause. Well done to all who participated and raised sponsorship and a big well done and thanks to our student organisers, James Kearney, Gavin Murray and Stephen Mordaunt.

GOLF

On Friday, February 8, our senior boys golf team played St Peter’s College in the Leinster quarter final. Unfortunately both of the pairings Daniel Redmond and Owen Young and Cormac Redmond and John Young were narrowly beaten, losing the second match on the final hole. In harsh weather conditions away from home, the lads put in a good effort but were unlucky on the day. All four qualify for this team for two more years so they indeed have a bright future.

UNDER-14 FOOTBALL

College Wexford were on full points. Rules dictated that the two finalists would be decided in a points shoot out.

In the final, against Presentation College, Wexford, the Coláiste Bhríde girls hit the ground running. As the final whistle blew, the Coláiste Bhríde girls were crowned champions and the trophy was presented to influential captain, Melissa Doran.
