SOCCER ACTION

There is no doubt that one of the greatest days in Glencormac United Football Clubs history was their Wicklow Cup Final appearance last June. Well last Sunday, the Glens took another step closer to repeating that fête when they defeated Arklow Town 4-2 to set up a Quarter final place. This was a tough battle and the Glens trailed 0-1 at the break in a tight first half. Luke Reynolds got an equaliser just after the restart but an Arklow Penalty made it 1-2 after 55 minutes. However, the Glens took control after that and Josh O’Callaghan made it 2-2 before Nathan Watters and Simon Doyle sealed a good win. Sam O’Callaghan had a superb game in a good team display.

The village of Newtown and surrounding areas were shocked to learn of the passing of Peter ‘Padge’ Farrell last week. Peter was a valued player on teams in our club in the late eighties/early nineties. To his mother Denise, father Eamonn, siblings Paudie and Niamh, his grandfather Jimmy, his extended family and his large circle of friends, our club would like to offer our deepest condolences at this sad time. The regard that many people held Padge in was evident by the huge turnout at his funeral Mass. May he rest in peace.
