THE LATE VINNY BRADY R.I.P.

The Quill Road and Kilmacanogue lost another famous resident last Monday (18th) when Vincent (Vinnie) Brady passed away peacefully at St Vincent’s University Hospital. Vinnie was a brother of the late Lar and the recently deceased Bridie.

He will be sadly missed and remembered with love by his beloved wife Philomena, children Martin, Una, Vincent and Noel, daughter-in-law Emily, son-in-law Dave, grandchildren Michael, Tia, Joey, Dan, Aoife and Callum, brother Seán, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Vinnie was a great and wellknown character in our community. He played Soccer, GAA and fonder member of the Kilmacanogue Athletic Club where he showed great promise as an athlete. When the legs got slower, Vinnie turned his attention to the pigeons, a passion kept on to date by his son, Vinnie Junior.

His Funeral Mass took place last Wednesday morning in St Mochonog’s Church followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery and a large crowd gathered to say a final farewell to a real gentleman. We also know that a lot only heard of his passing after he was laid to rest and they would like to offer their sincere sympathy to all the family on

Our local Kilmacanogue Cardiac First Responders will host a table quiz this Monday, February 25, in Plucks to raise much needed funds.

These money will be used by the Kilmac CFR for the Public Access Defibrillator Scheme with lots of these defibrillators in key locations around the community but the pads need chancing every couple of years weather they are used regularly or not and they are not cheap.

A team of four costs €40 and there will be lots of Raffle Prizes on the night also. If you would like to enter a team or help out in any way, you can contact Sharon Carey at 087 4161706 or ‘Lady Pluck’ (Caroline) at 086 2586762. The event will start at 8 p.m. and we know the people of Kilmacanogue will give them the great support this voluntary group deserve.

HISTORY SOCIETY LECTURES

The local Kilmacanogue History Society have a really interesting item for their next Talk on Tuesday, March 5, in Glenview Hotel. Titled ‘My Grandfathers part in the Anglo-Irish Treaty’, the speaker will be Professor Timothy Lynch.

Professor Lynch’s grandfather was Fionán Lynch (1889 – 1966), Irish revolutionary, barrister, politician, and judge. He was a member of the Irish Team that went to London in 1921 to participate in negotiation of the Anglo-Irish Treaty. Prof Tim Lynch, will use a recorded interview made by BBC, of his Grandfathers experience of the Anglo-Irish negotiations. Therefore, in effect, there will be two speakers at our talk, ‘Fionán’ and Tim – imagine having the opportunity to hear the authentic voice of a member of the Anglo-Irish Treaty negotiation team being interviewed shortly after the event.

It is hoped that Tim will also share some of his family’s reminiscences of the momentous

I know many keen gardeners in Kilmacanogue will be interested and also attend the Enniskerry Gardening Club lectures. Well the next one will take place on Wednesday, March 6, at 8 p.m. in the Powerscourt Parochial Hall in Enniskerry (beside Poppies). The special guest speaker will be Roger Goodwillie (co – author of the book ‘Flowers of the Burren’ and all are eagerly forward to hearing his presentation.

There are six new members this year which is great to see and members are reminded that they should have paid both their yearly membership of €50 and €40 Green Fees to Greg in advance of the outing no later than Sunday, March 10.

SOCCER ACTION

There was no senior matches last weekend but two junior teams returned to action. The under-15s were away to Carnew in the Premier and recorded a 2-0 victory with Bradley Cullen and Oisín Kelly getting the goals.

This was a great start to the season as Carnew is a very difficult place to go and get a result at any time and the Glens were very slow to start but when they did, they looked good and the breakthrough came just before half time when Bradley struck his shot low past the keeper to give Glencormac a 1-0 half time lead. Then in the second half, The Glens had a good few chances but failed to convert them till Oisín broke through and went one on one with the keeper and calmly slotted the ball past the keeper to make it 2-0. Then Charlie Frawley made a great save with about five minutes left to keep it at 2-0 and that’s the way it finished. A great start with two goals scored and a clean sheet and more importantly a good all-round display by the lads.

The under-13s also had their first game away to Enniskerry and they were defeated 4-1. After dominating the first 20 minutes but not taking their chances, the Glens found themselves 2-0 down at the break which was disappointing. However, they rallied back better in the second period with Birthday Boy Michael Prendergast netting the goal but it finished 4-1 to the hosts. Manager Alan Prendergast was not to downbeat as it was the first game back and his squad were a bit rusty.

GAA CLUB NOTES

DIV.1A LEAGUE – The senior team travelled to Greystones Sunday morning to face Éire Óg in the third round of league matches. Kilmacanogue had the better start and led seven points to two points at one stage before Éire Óg got the first goal of the game which was quickly followed by another andthehostsled2-03to07atthe break. Despite getting another goal early in the second half, Éire Óg could not dismiss the challenge of Kilmacanogue, who kept picking of points and the hosts led by one point going into the closing stages. Simon Doyle got a goal followed by a Josh O’Callaghan point and there was just the minimum between the sides. However, Éire Óg replied with another goal and a point at the end to seal a 4-09 to 1-13 victory. A good display by Kilmac but goals win games and conceding four was disappointing.

TABLE QUIZ – On the junior front, a future date for the diary will be a table quiz for the juvenile section of the club. All money made will go towards the purchasing of new gear and equipment for the future stars and this will take place on Monday, March 11, at 8 p.m. in Plucks in Kilmacanogue. A table of four will cost €40 and to book a team, please contact co-ordinator Jackie Fox at 086 8494655.
