CELEBRATIONS IN NEWCASTLE
A CHEESE and wine reception awaited all visitors to Newcastle Community Centre at Saturday night’s community celebration.
It was also a way for the Newcastle Community Centre Committee to thank the local community, business people and organisations for their ongoing support down through the years.
Committee Chairperson, Jane Smith said of the event: ‘We had some local groups and businesses featured.
There was a good attendance on the night and a great atmosphere. Newcastle Residents Association deserve a special mention.
They carried out a “health check” of Newcastle, opened up a heritage walk and did wonderfully in the Tidy Towns competition with a score of 312 points.
‘We work very closely with the Residents Association and other groups and the night was a celebratory event for the whole community.’
Helen Howes of Wicklow PPN was in attendance and the night also offered an opportunity for members of the community to view the refurbishment works recently carried out in the centre, as well as a new accessible toilet for people with disabilities.
‘We got some Capital Sports funding and an allocation from Wicklow County Council to convert an old store room into an accessible toilet so as to make the community centre more inclusive for everyone.
‘It’s something we have wanted to do for some time now. Beforehand people with disabilities couldn’t really use the centre.
‘We also refurbished some lighting and the floors so the whole centre is now suitable for people of all abilities,’ added Ms Smith.
