MINOR HOCKEY

On Tuesday, January 7, the minor hockey team played host to Loreto Beaufort. The Dominican girls put pressure on the Beaufort defence immediately and pressed hard for the first 15 minutes of the game. Unfortunately, against the run of play, the Beaufort team received a short corner and scored from a well-practised set piece. It remained 1-0 to the visiting team at half-time.

The Dominican girls returned to the pitch after half-time full of determination. After 10 minutes, they received a short corner and scored a brilliant goal. Meabh Donnellan sent a strong ball to the top of the circle and, Saoirse Dolan struck the ball beautifully into the right corner of the goal. A great end to end match ensued, and the game remained 1-1 at full-time.

Well done to all the players on their perseverance after going a goal down. To date, the girls have had two wins, one draw and one loss. Alexandra College will be their next opponents and this match is due to be played on January 24.

SENIOR HOCKEY

On Tuesday, January 7, Dave and Eleanor, Education Guides from the National Parks and Wildlife Service came into the school to talk to the Transition Year students about humans and animals and their place in the natural world.

It was a very interesting talk which posed a lot of questions and debates on issues such as the ranking of different species on the planet, and how their absence would impact the environment, endangered species and the reasons behind their endangerment, the negative effects of human lifestyle on the environment and the sport of hunting.

It was a very thought-provoking session as the girls were asked to give their opinions on zoos, circuses and pesticides. The talk ended with the slogan Respect for Animals – Respect for Nature – Self Respect.

SENIOR BASKETBALL

Huge congratulations to the under-19 basketball team on their resounding success in the quarter-finals of the Leinster League. The game took place on January 8 in Arklow, and the opponents were FCJ Bunclody. The captain and regular top scorer Róisín Ring had to sit the game out due to a sprained ankle, but this only gave the team a greater incentive to succeed. Roisín did a fantastic job encouraging and advising from the side-line.

Initially, the match was close, but the Dominican girls dug deep and pulled away after halftime. They were collectively strong in defence but had a range of shooters. Aoife Maguire, Kelly Byrne and Emma Coffey all contributed significantly. Many thanks to the referees Dave McCann and Mick Larkin.

We wish the girls the very best of luck in the semi-final which will take place on January 15 Hopefully, Captain Roisín will be fit to return
