LOCAL COUPLE TO AWARDED BENE MERENTI MEDAL.

Father John-Paul Sheridan is delighted to announce that Pope Francis has awarded the Benemerent­i Medal to Jimmy and Maura Whelan, in acknowledg­ment of their long and dedicated service to the parish of St Brigid. Annacurra.

Bishop Brennan will confer the honour at the Saturday evening Mass at 6.30 p.m., on Saturday, February 1, feast day of the patron of the parish. Please come and join in the celebratio­n that night.

Refreshmen­ts will be served in the hall afterwards.

YOGA CLASS FOR CHILDREN

Due to expression of interest a proposed children’s yoga class may commence Thursday, March 5, with Aoife from Enlighten Yoga at Annacurra Community hall. There are two times you can choose from as need numbers to proceed: 2.45 p.m. to 3.30 p.m. and 4.15 p.m. to 5 p.m. Age group: 5-11. Cost: €24 per four-week block

Introducin­g yoga to your children helps establish healthy habits at an early age. Yoga can enhance your child’s strength, coordinati­on and flexibilit­y, while encouragin­g body awareness and self-esteem. It can reduce your child’s anxiety and stress and promote a sense of calmness.

Please note minimum numbers need to be reached before class can commence.

MORNING FITNESS CLASS

Proposed Adult fitness class Thursday mornings from March 5. Day and time: Thursday mornings from 10 a.m. to 10.45 a.m. at Annacurra Community hall. Cost: €30 per four-week block. Try a new way of working out this Spring.

‘Pound with Ais’ workout is a fun, full body workout that combines cardio, conditioni­ng, and strength training with yoga and pilates inspired movements, using lightly weighted drumsticks. POUND transforms drumming into an incredibly effective way of working out and provides the perfect atmosphere for letting loose, getting energized, toning up and rockin’ out.

This 45 minute class will combine a 30 minute POUND WITH AIS WORKOUT and a 15 minute STRETCH, this gives you the opportunit­y to stretch it all out, to loosen up those joints and muscles.

Aisling is offering to give a taster workshop, at a discounted price, to see if enough interest to proceed with the weekly class, at Annacurra Community Hall, on Thursday, February 27, from 10 a.m. to 10.45 a.m. Cost €4.

All you need to bring along is yoga mat or beach towel.

TAE KWON DO CLASS FOR CHILDREN

Doreen Kenny, recently made history, by becoming the first woman in Europe to achieve the rank of Tae Kwan Do master. Doreen continues her classes in Annacurra Community hall on Wednesdays from 4.30. Book now to secure place. Time: 4.30 to 5.15. Cost: €25 per month (monthly fees only). Age group: 5-12

Taekwon Do is renowned for developing focus, co-ordination, physical strength, self confidence, agility, balance, discipline and respect.

ADULTS TAI CHI CLASS

There is a Tai Chi and Qi Gong beginners’ class at Annacurra Community Hall on Wednesday mornings from 11 a.m. to midday. Cost €80 for eight-week block

The club send our deepest sympathy to Chris and Seán McGrath. Mary passed away after a short illness and will be greatly missed.

It is also with great sadness we lost Sarah Carty. In her far too few years Sarah was a dedicated member of the camogie club. She was so strong and always positive, even in the toughest of times. She will be sadly missed and all our sympathy to her mother Mary and all her family.

BARNARDOS USED STAMP APPEAL

Thank you to all who have helped with this appeal. Thousands of stamps collected during the past few weeks. The collection boxes, are still at the following locations: Annacurra Church; The Saltee Pub. Annacurra; Londis, Aughrim. Annacurra parents’ associatio­n are delighted to welcome Liz Valloor, to the school on Tuesday, January 28, at 7.30 p.m. to deliver a free talk.

Liz is Parenting Coach, Author, Radio broadcaste­r and a former school principle. We will update this section next week with some more details but we wanted to give people notice to save the date - Tuesday, January 28, at 7.30 p.m.

AUGHRIM ATHLETICS CLUB

A very happy new year to our club members and friends. The club will hold its annual AGM in the Coffee Dock, Aughrim Sports Complex on Wednesday, January 22, at 8.30. We look forward to sharing club updates and plans with you on the night. We are looking for nomination­s for secretary and chairperso­n roles in particular. The club is now well establishe­d and the committee would really like to attract some new people with new ideas etc to continue moving our small and mighty club forward.

Training resumes as normal for adults and children, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Sports Complex from Monday the 13th. We look forward to welcoming new members. Club membership will be due for renewal in January, forms and details available at training. We look forward to seeing as many people as possible at the AGM.

NOTICE OF EGM

An EGM of Avoca Community Hall Co. Ltd. will be held in Avoca Community Hall on January 16 at 7 p.m. We request all members of the community to attend.

The purpose of this meeting is to establish if a new board of directors can be appointed or if the hall is to revert back to the ownership of St Laurence O’Toole Diocesan Trust.
