NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

Slowly but surely our teams are making their way back in preparation for the new season. The competitive age groups will commence their games on the weekend of Saturday/Sunday, February 22/23, with the non-competitive age groups starting a week later.

Regards the issue of weather or not the WDSL will continue with calendar football (February-November) or move back to the old traditional season (September – May), this issue will be clarified at the WDSL AGM on January 23 in Rathnew. Regardless we will all be back in action in mid-February. We will keep you all updated as we get information. Regards our teams getting back to action, we are always looking for new players for all age groups. We will be fielding teams from under-eight (2012) up to under-14 (2006) in the WDSL

Also, while at present we are blessed to have volunteers who coach our teams and work away on our committee, we are still short a few bodies for both roles. If you think you could help with getting involved with coaching of any of our teams or would have a couple of hours to spare to assist the club at committee level, we would love to hear from you. Contact our secretary Hughie at hughienolan@gmail.com for further information.

Our 2019 Club Presentation will take place on Saturday, February 1, in the community centre from midday till 2 p.m. Up for grabs will be the annual awards of Player of the Year, Most Improved Player and Top Goalscorer. Added to that there will be all the team awards from the season just gone. More details will follow.

The club sends their best wishes for a speedy recovery to under-12 player Ryan Collins, who sustained a bad ankle injury recently. Get well soon Ryan.

Our ever-popular Development Squad are now back in training under the guidance of head coach Lauren Nolan, who is ably assisted by fellow coaches Grace, Nathan and Seán. They coach four- to seven-yearolds in the community centre from 10 a.m. till 11 a.m. every Saturday morning. We will be running our second Last Man Standing competition on the weekend of Saturday, February 22 – Monday, February 24. Unfortunately, we are unable to start before this date for a variety of reasons. Cost to participate is €10 per head. The Prize Pot will be 50% of all money taken in up to a maximum of €500. If you are interested in taking part, please contact any coach or committee member. All money collected go back into the youth of the area. On a sadder note the club extends their sincere condolences to the families and friends of Billy Carthy (Mountainview Drive Newtown), Gerry Shannon (Church Road Newtown) and Shaun Temple (Bray) who all sadly passed away recently. May they all rest in peace.
