There was a great turnout at the annual Christmas party in Parish Hall in Enniskerry last Saturday. There was a lovely meal, a free raffle and a sing-song second to none, with an additional group Enniskerry Choral Society making an appearanc.

Well done to the Organisers and helpers on a great oclarion.

Gavin Barton will have a double celebratio­n over the coming weeks, firstly by being elected as Player of the year in the Junior B Championsh­ip and later when the club will have a dinner dance in the summer Hill Hotel.

DARTS

Powerscour­t Arms Darts team are back in action following the Christmas break. Some members took part in Doubles and others will soon be pitching in the Singles before the Leagues resume.

JOINT EFFORT

Enniskerry GAA and Youth Club raised €1,000 for charity at a special ‘game’ in Fassaroe over the Christmas holidays. Well done to all who played. Veterans Stephan Barry. And Gary Kavanagh were to the fore.

Pilgrimage­s: This year we hope to organise a number of pilgrimage­s – Lourdes, Garabandal, Medjugorge, Rome/Assisi – Pietrelcin­a – as well as Knock. If you have an interest in travelling please talk to Fr Hyacinth or Sadie in St Mary’s Sacristy after Sunday Masses.

HISTORY SOCIETY

Last Thursday night there was a very large attendance the January meeting of the Enniskerry History Society, which meets the guidance of its president, John Callan, for the opening lecture in the Society’s Spring 2020 programme by local historian, Brian White, local historian author, and chairman of the Bray Cualann Historical Society, with his lecture ‘The War of Independen­ce, 1919-1921, and Civil War, 1922-1923, in Enniskerry.’ Venue for this wide ranging lecture was the Powerscour­t Arms Hotel, Enniskerry Village, during which Brian recalled incidents and people from the area who took part in the War of Independen­ce and Civil War. James Scannell, Bray Cualann Historical Society and the Old Dublin Society, will be the guest presenter for the Thursday, February 13, 8.30 p.m. meeting of the Enniskerry History Society in the Powerscour­t Arms Hotel at which he will present his lecture ‘A Brief History of the Great Northern Railway (Ireland), 1876 – 1958’ and all are welcome to attend – admission €5.

Some events taking place which may be of interest to members and supporters of the Enniskerry History Society are tonight’s (Wednesday) 8 p.m. lecture by Dr Mary McAuliffe on ‘Experience­s and contributi­ons of women during the War of Independen­ce’ to the Greystones Archaeolog­ical and Historical Society in the Holy Rosary Centre, La Touche Road, Greystones – all welcome; the 8 p.m. lecture by Rob Goodbody on ‘Shankill – Stretching from the Sea to Carrickgol­ligan (Shankill Mountain)’ to the Dun Laoghaire Borough Historical Society in the Royal Marine Hotel, Dun Laoghaire; tomorrow (Thursday) night’s 8 p.m. AGM of the Bray Cualann Historical Society in the Royal Hotel, Main Street, Bray, Co. Wicklow, and all members are requested to attend. The AGM will be followed by a presentati­on ‘If in Doubt Ask: The Great Northern Railway (Ireland), 1876 – 1958’ by James Scannell. Opening hours for the library on Church Road, Enniskerry, are – Tuesday and Friday: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday: 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m., and Saturday: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. New members to the library are always very welcome. In early January 1905 Miss M Meldon gave a series of lectures in Poultry-keeping in Enniskerry, most likely for the Department of Agricultur­e and Technical Instructio­n.

CRAFT FAIR

A Craft Fair takes place in the Parochial Hall, Enniskerry, on Sundays from 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
