Tougher journey for Kilcoole United

-

IT took Kilcoole United seven games to reach the Hills of Arklow Wicklow Cup final in 1993.

The Goosebankers scored 11 goals on the way to the Carlisle Grounds and conceded four.

Glenview’s progress to the final was much more straightforward as they won all their games and only needed extra-time and penalties to see off Little Bray in the belter of a semi-final.

Kilcoole’s first-round opponents were Roundwood away and the Goosebankers emerged victorious by 1-0 with the goal coming from Derek Campbell.

In the second round they welcomed Wolfe Tone Wanderers and got the better of their Bray opponents by 2-0 thanks to goals from Pat ‘Boxer’ Doyle and Alan Harris.

A difficult joust with Wicklow Town followed with a 1-1 draw in the first game, Freddie Hamilton scoring the vital goal for Kilcoole.

In the replay Kilcoole came good with a 3-1 win away with strikes from Sean Greene, John Young and Derek Campbell knocking out Finlay Park opponents.

Things were equally as tough in the next round when Kilcoole travelled to Enniskerry and played out a 0-0 draw. But goals from Sean Greene and Freddie Hamilton were enough to send them through to the semi-final against Greystones that saw them emerge thanks to a penalty shoot-out.

Glenview opened up with a 4-0 win over Northend and followed that with a clipping of Ashford B, 4-1.

Two goals from Stephen Harris and a third from Joe Ronan saw them topple Orchard United away.

The welcomed Newtown for the fourth round clash and defeated the Magpies by 3-1, goals from Jason Kelly (2) and Declan Harris doing the job.

And, finally, they dispatched Little Bray in the semi-final 4-3 on penalties.
