BALTINGLASS youths football team thumped Hacketstown United in the Carlow Youths league this week in 1996.

Derek O’Connell hit four of the winners’ goals and they added three more strikes, through David Nolan, Brian O’Connell and Paul Foster. James Tallon was on target for Hackstown.

ORCHARD UNITED A GLENVIEW A

A more clinical Glenview attack proved too much for a brave Orchard United when the sides met in the third round of the Hills of Arklow Wicklow Cup competition this week in 1993.

The victory continued a significant improvement in the form of the Glenview side who would go on to win the competition outright thanks to a 1-0 win over Kilcoole United in May, but the Division 1 side gave the Darglesiders plenty to think about during this decent encounter back in February.

‘Orchard started well with PJ Vickers forcing Glenview keeper Karl Clarke to pull off a couple of good saves. But it was the visitors who got the crucial breakthrough when Alan Mooney’s superb through ball found Stephen Harris and he duly planted the ball into the top corner of the net,’ read the report in that week’s newspaper.

Orchard started to pile on the pressure in the second half, we are told. David Howard hit the woodwork and Philip Smullen had a shot cleared off the line.

‘Joe Ronan then made victory secure for the Bray side in the 70th minute when he ran onto a Declan Harris pass and rifled home from 16 yards.

‘Stephen Harris then put the icing on the cake in the closing minutes, sliding the ball home from cloe range,’ it added.

Orchard United: David O’Toole, Nigel Greene, Paul McGlone, Thomas Vickers, Robert Farrell, Ben Greene, PJ Vickers, Philip Smullen, Peter Fee, Paul Hayden, David Howard. Sub: Neil Stewart.

Glenview: Karl Clarke, David Murphy, Mick Mohan, Ger Byrne, Tom O’Brien, Alan Mooney, Stephen Harris, Sean Stephens, Declan Harris, Joe Ronan, David Egan. Subs: Tom Byrne, Michael Fegan.
