ROAD TERRORISTS
Alan Rosenbaum has written a significant article about Dr. Michael Goldenhersch and his passion for Israeli road safety since 1975 ( July 22). Goldenhersch is interested in inculcating a pilot program to train new drivers to have the personality and mental approach needed to be safer drivers. It’s definitely commendable and much-needed funds should be raised for this vital program.
However, this is only a drop in the bucket for actual road safety. The dismal reality over many years is that not only hasn’t much changed, but it gets worse each year. The death toll rises, including a heartbreaking six-year-old victim, just recently, along with the boy’s mother and other siblings in critical condition. My heart aches, as I have a personal connection to the family. So many of our hearts are broken daily from victims of the past, as well.
Police only enforce rules they care about, without many rules they are too tired to enforce. These are crucial, lifesaving rules. The bottom line is that too many experienced drivers simply don’t value life. They’d rather get where they want to go when they want to, and don’t care that there are drivers who do want to get to their destination safely. Too many play driver’s roulette on the roads and as a result, there are road terrorists all over the country.
Statistics have shown that there are more road fatalities than there is loss of life from wars in our country. This is a statistic that cannot and must not be tolerated.
This is especially pertinent in this season of mourning for our holy destroyed Temple and as we will soon say the words from the book of Lamentations, “for these things do I weep.” PHYLLIS HECHT
