Moonlighting is strong in US

-

Is moonlighting becoming the new norm? From bartender to blogger, it’s not uncommon for US workers to have a side job to earn a little extra money or pursue an area of interest.

According to a new Career-Builder survey, 29% of workers have second job, a trend that is especially strong among millennials. Forty-four percent of those ages 25-34 and 39% of those 18-24 work second jobs, compared to 29% of those 35-44, 22% of those 45-54 and 19% of those age 55 and older.

Moonlighting is more common in the South than any other region in the US, at 34%. This compares to 29% of workers in the West, 27% in the Midwest and 23% in the Northeast.

Workers of all income levels are taking side gigs. Nearly one in five workers making more than $75,000 (18%) and 12% of those making more than $100,000 currently have some other source of income outside of their full time jobs.

Unsurprisingly, employees in relatively low-paid occupations are more likely to take second jobs: 34% of those making less than both $50,000 and $35,000 per year.
