Kershaw flirts with no-no in Dodgers’ win

Clayton Kershaw did not allow an earned run for a third consecutiv­e start, and the Los Angeles Dodgers held off the Arizona Diamondbac­ks 4-3 on Tuesday night.

Kershaw (13-2) went seven scoreless innings, taking a no-hitter into the seventh and allowing two hits overall on 117 pitches. Justin Turner and Yasmani Grandal drove in two runs apiece for the Dodgers.

The Dodgers are 16-2 when Kershaw starts. On Tuesday, he struck out 11, became the majors’ first 13-game winner and the first Dodger to win 13 before the All-Star break since Orel Hershiser in 1988.

Kershaw lowered his ERA to 2.19, and he had extended his streak of consecutiv­e innings without giving up an earned run to 20, all since that game when he gave up four home runs.

Red Sox 11, Rangers 4

Boston ran its winning streak to six games by pounding Texas behind the hitting of Andrew Benintendi and the pitching of David Price.

Benintendi went 5-for-5 with two homers and six RBIs, while Price (4-2) had his best outing of the season, throwing six scoreless innings.

Astros 16, Braves 4

George Springer had his second four-hit game of the season, leading five Houston players with at least three hits as the Astros thrashed Atlanta.

The Astros matched their season high for hits, 19, and scored in double digits for the 11th time.

Nationals 11, Mets 4

Daniel Murphy went 4-for-5 with five RBIs against his former team, and Bryce Harper had three hits and three runs as Washington cruised to a victory over New York.

Nationals starter Joe Ross (5-3) gave up just two runs on eight hits in seven innings. The right-hander has given up just seven earned runs in his past four starts.

Tigers 5, Giants 3

Justin Upton’s third hit of the day, a tie-breaking two-run single to left with two out in the seventh inning, lifted Detroit to a victory over San Francisco.

All-Star Michael Fulmer (8-6) served up two home runs after not giving up one since April 29. He struck out five, walked one and gave up five hits over eight innings. Justin Wilson pitched the ninth and got his ninth save.

Blue Jays 4, Yankees 1

J.A. Happ pitched six effective innings as Toronto scored all its runs in the third inning and snapped a five-game losing streak.

Happ (3-5) improved to 3-1 in his last five starts by allowing one run and four hits. He struck out six, walked two and threw a season-high 114 pitches.

Jose Bautista had three hits, including an RBI single, as Toronto won for the third time in 12 games. Justin Smoak had a bases-loaded walk, and Kendrys Morales hit a two-run single.

Rays 6, Cubs 5

Tim Beckham went 2-for-4 and ignited a five-run fourth inning with a two-run homer as Tampa Bay held on for the victory over Chicago.

Steven Souza Jr. also had two hits to help make a winner of right-hander Chris Archer (7-5), who picked up his third victory in his past four tries.

Archer worked six innings, allowing three runs on eight hits. He struck out eight and walked three while throwing a season-high 116 pitches, 80 for strikes.

Marlins 5, Cardinals 2

Christian Yelich’s three-run homer in the sixth inning erased a two-run deficit and put Miami ahead to stay in a victory over St. Louis.

Yelich’s 406-foot shot off Lance Lynn (6-6) scored Dee Gordon and Giancarlo Stanton. Gordon doubled with one out, while Stanton reached on a throwing error by second baseman Matt Carpenter, who knocked down Stanton’s 118 mph liner behind second but pulled first baseman Luke Voit off the bag.

Twins 5, Angels 4

Kyle Gibson pitched into the seventh inning, and Byron Buxton homered among three hits in a victory over Los Angeles.

Ehire Adrianza drove in two runs on sacrifice flies in his first game back from the disabled list for the Twins, who took the first two games of the series and have beat Los Angeles in nine of the past 12 meetings. Gibson (5-6) had his longest outing of the season, pitching 62/3 innings with two runs allowed on five hits. Braandon Kintzler secured his 22nd save in 25 chances.

Athletics 7, White Sox 6

Rookie Franklin Barreto belted a walkoff home run with one out in the ninth inning to help Oakland end a six-game losing streak.

Barreto hit his second homer of the year off Chicago’s fifth pitcher, Tommy Kahnle, on a full count. Yonder Alonso hit two homers and Matt Joyce added a two-run shot for the A’s, who won on the Fourth of July for the sixth straight year.

Pirates 3, Phillies 0

Jameson Taillon struck out a career-high nine in five scoreless innings, and Andrew McCutchen homered twice to lead Pittsburgh over Philadelph­ia.

Taillon (5-2, 2.73 ERA) extended his scoreless streak to 111/3 innings in his fifth start since his return to baseball after recovering from surgery to treat testicular cancer.

Brewers 6, Orioles 2

Jimmy Nelson struck out eight, and Eric Thames hit a pair of home runs to lead Milwaukee past Baltimore.

Nelson held the Orioles to one unearned run, six hits and a walk over seven innings to win his second in a row and fifth in his past six decisions.
