Beagle, Capitals clip ’Canes in final second

Jay Beagle scored with 1.2 seconds remaining to lift the visiting Washington Capitals to a 4-3 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday nigh.

Beagle, who snapped a 14-game scoring drought, skated down the right side of the ice and seemed to surprise Carolina goaltender Cam Ward after Nicklas Backstrom delivered the puck from the other side of the ice.

Carolina led late in the third period before Washington’s Brett Connolly scored unassisted with 3:08 remaining to even the score at three. Connolly converted off a turnover by Hurricanes defenseman Noah Hanifin.

Jeff Skinner scored 1:49 into the third period to give Carolina a 3-2 lead. Washington’s Alex Ovechkin scored his 28th goal of the season, and teammate Lars Eller scored a goal for the fourth game in a row.

In other NHL action, David Kampf scored his first NHL goal to make his 23rd birthday truly worth celebratin­g, and goaltender Jeff Glass stopped 31 shots to lead the Chicago Blackhawks past the Winnipeg Jets 2-1.

Kampf also collected an assist to net his first career twopoint game. Glass improved his record for the Blackhawks to 3-1-1.

Also, Darnell Nurse’s second goal of the game completed the Edmonton Oilers’ 4-2 comeback victory from an early two-goal deficit en route to a road victory over the Arizona Coyotes.

Nurse netted the winner at 3:57 of the third period when he unloaded a slap shot from the top of the left circle that cleanly beat Arizona goalie Antti Raanta. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins’ emp-ty-net goal with 20 seconds left sealed the win.
