‘Mrs. Maisel’ goes to the Catskills

Everyone’s favorite fictional Jewish comedienne will be back on screens later this year, when The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel returns for its second season.

Amazon Prime Video released its first teaser for the award-winning show last week, featuring star Rachel Brosnahan as sparkling and witty as ever.

The first season of the series, which hit the streaming service last year, features Jewish Manhattanite Miriam “Midge” Maisel, a mom of two in the 1950s whose life sent her tumbling onto a stand-up stage – to the dismay of her family.

And the trailer for the second season proves that Maisel’s Jewish identity will remain front and center, as she heads to perform in the Catskills – the upstate New York resort area that attracted so many Jews and comedians it became known as the “Borscht Belt.” Everyone from Woody Allen to Billy Crystal, Joan Rivers, Rodney Dangerfield and Mel Brooks got their starts on stage in the Catskills.

Another scene in the Season 2 trailer shows Maisel’s parents (played by the inimitable Tony Shalhoub, fresh off a run in the Broadway show The Band’s Visit, and Marin Hinkle) sitting in synagogue on Yom Kippur and thumping their chests as part of the traditional service.

The first season of the show also featured copious jokes about brisket, the High Holy Days, intermarriage and visits to Israel. The program won two Golden Globe Awards, two Critics’ Choice Awards and a Peabody Award, among other accolades. It was also nominated for six Emmy Awards, which will be determined at the ceremony in September.

Amazon did not provide an exact premiere date for the second season, but it is slated to return before the end of the year.
