Youth Olympic team brings home three medals

BUENOS AIRES (JTA) – Israeli athletes won a gold medal and a bronze medal in individual competitio­ns and a silver in mixed pair gymnastics in the Buenos Aires Youth Olympics games.

The games ended on Friday. Yonatan Fridman and Noa Kazdo Yakar won the silver in acrobatic gymnastics, in the mixed pair category on October 15. On the first day of the games, October 6, Anastasya Gorbenko won a gold medal in the women’s 200-meter individual medley, setting a new Israeli record for the event of 2:12.88.

The following day, in the second day of swimming competitio­n, Denis Loktev won the bronze medal in the 200-meter freestyle.

The Israeli swimmers appeared in an article on the official webpage of the games on the first weekend. “Last night I saw Anastasia win a gold medal. I felt hungry, excited. I’m very proud because it’s a small country.” said Loktev. He added, “We have very good youth.”

Nineteen Israeli athletes – 12 males and seven females – competed in gymnastics, athletics, acrobatic gym, athletic gym, rhythmic gym, judo, tae kwon do, swimming, triathlon and sailing.

The Israelis remained in Argentina over the weekend. On Friday they visited the rebuilt headquarte­rs of the AMIA Buenos Aires Jewish Community Center. The center was bombed in 1994, killing 85 people and injuring hundreds.
