Deri mourns at Theresienstadt on official visit to Czech Republic
Interior Minister Arye Deri visited the Theresienstadt concentration camp on Sunday during his official visit to the Czech Republic.
“The Nazis were exterminated, and Israel is alive!,” Deri said as he explained the importance of his visit as an Israeli minister in Theresienstadt.
“The Lord will avenge the blood of all the Jews and of all the children who were murdered,” Deri wrote in the guest-book.
Theresienstadt, built in the town of Terezín, was a stop for many Jews to larger extermination camps. It also served as a ruse to fool King Christian X of Denmark, the Red Cross and others of the terrible conditions and the atrocities the Nazis committed against the Jews.
The Nazis even forced Rafael Schächter, a famous pianist, to perform during for the Red Cross during their visit.
Some 33,000 people died in Theresienstadt, mainly because of the conditions, while about 88,000 passed though Theresienstadt before being deported to extermination camps.
