has lived in the U.S. since 2004 when she fled Guatemala, fearing for her life because of the unchecked gang violence in her neighborhood. In August 2017, with a deportation order hanging over her, she was ordered by ICE to check-in and bring with her a non-stop plane ticket back to her native country. Unwilling to abandon her three U.S.- citizen children, she moved herself and her family into a sanctuary church in Washington Heights, NY, where she lived for over two years. This photo was taken on her first day in the sanctuary. Her daughter picked the door as their wall.
