CCA rievoca la Open University CCA Recalls the Open University
An heritage worth being rediscovered, university courses broadcast by the BBC in the 1970s are on display in Montreal
Curata dall’architetto e storico portoghese Joaquim Moreno, The University is Now on Air. (FG)
In the 1970s, under a push by Harold Wilson’s Labour government, millions of homes in the UK tuned in to the BBC to take Open University courses, an initiative which had as its goal to make university education accessible to everyone. The architect and historian Joaquim Moreno focuses on just a unit – History of Architecture and Design 1890-1939 – in the exhibit The University is Now on Air. Broadcasting Modern Architecture, on stage at the Montreal’s CCA (up to April 1). The unit was part of the degree programme in art history, yet the richness and vastness of materials and of parallel stories to this educational chapter is incredible. The 24 lessons of this course are presented on a dedicated YouTube channel
