CURE NON CONVENZIONALI
UNCONVENTIONAL TREATMENTS
A partire dagli anni venti del secolo scorso in tutta l’ex Unione Sovietica iniziarono a proliferare le case di cura, centri per il benessere voluti dal regime. Oggi molti di questi luoghi sono in disuso, altri continuano a offrire trattamenti decisamente non convenzionali (come i bagni nell’olio nero grezzo di Naftalan a 38 gradi, gli impacchi di paraffina o di cioccolato, la ginnastica dentro una cava di sale a -420 metri) in insolite architetture neoclassiche o costruttiviste, vestigia dell’epoca sovietica. Maryam Omidi ci racconta le storie di una quarantina di queste case di cura, dall’Armenia alla Crimea, dall’Ucraina al Kazakistan, dall’Azerbaijan al Turkmenistan. Ad accompagnare i testi di Omidi, il bellissimo reportage fotografico che alterna alle immagini delle architetture i ritratti dei frequentatori di oggi e dei particolari trattamenti forniti. Uno sguardo su un mondo poco conosciuto ma dall’indiscutibile fascino. ( On printed paper)
In the 1920s sanatoriums began to spring up all over the Soviet Union, health resorts set up by the regime. Today many of these places have fallen into disuse, but others continue to operate and, along with some decidedly unconventional treatments (such as baths in the black crude oil of Naftalan at a temperature of 38 degrees, compresses of paraffin or chocolate and gymnastics in a salt mine at a depth of 420 metres), offer the possibility of observing from close-up masterpieces of neoclassical and constructivist architecture, vestiges of the Soviet era. With Holidays in Soviet Sanatoriums Maryam Omidi, moving from Armenia to the Crimea, from Ukraine to Kazakhstan, from Azerbaijan to Turkmenistan, tells us the stories of about forty of these sanatoriums. Omidi’s texts are accompanied by a beautiful photographic reportage that alternates pictures of the buildings with portraits of the people who use them today and the unusual treatments provided.
