Nel 1957 l’Alcoa (Aluminum company of America) invitò Charles e Ray Eames a disegnare un oggetto ludico da utilizzare per pubblicizzare l’alluminio. Nacque così la Solar Do-nothing Machine, un intrigante congegno che, mosso dall’energia solare, accendeva un paio di lampadine. È un giocattolo che ancora incanta, ma soprattutto un precursore delle future macchine a energia solare. Fa parte degli oggetti e progetti selezionati per la mostra Transform! Designing the Future of Energy, che inaugura al Vitra Design Museum di Weil am Rhein il 23 marzo (fino al primo settembre). Focus sul ruolo centrale del design nell’ideare dispositivi e architetture per la produzione, la conservazione e l’utilizzo dell’energia. Un percorso che conduce dalla prima radiolina a celle solari, prodotta da Hoffman nel 1958, ai progetti più visionari degli ultimi anni, tra i quali spicca per originalità X-Land, firmato dallo studio francese XTU, che propone di trasformare le piattaforme petrolifere offshore abbandonate in ville ecologiche (in foto).
• In 1957, Alcoa (the Aluminum Company of America) invited Charles and Ray Eames to design a playful object to advertise aluminium. Thus was born the so-called Solar Do-Nothing Machine, an intriguing device that used solar energy to turn on a pair of light bulbs. It remains an intriguing toy, but more importantly it is a precursor of future solar-powered cars. It is one of the objects and design projects selected for the Transform! Designing the Future of Energy exhibition, which opens at the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein on March 23rd (until September 1st). The focus is on the central role played by design in dreaming up devices and works of architecture for the production, conservation and use of energy. The story can be traced back to the first solar cell radio, produced by Hoffman in 1958, right up to the most visionary projects of recent years, including the highly original X_Land, designed by the French studio XTU, whose aim is to turn abandoned offshore drilling platforms into ecofriendly villas (pictured). design-museum.de
