These are just some of the most famous mass protests that have involved urban public space, collected and told in this original book that is organised as a dictionary, the result of joint research by the DAM in Frankfurt and the MAK in Vienna. After an illustrated prologue summarising the main street demonstrations all the way back to the nineteenth century, the book defines many terms – from barricade and squatting to the toppling of monuments (usually the pulling down of statues) – in a useful exercise that attempts to define a subject that has not been approached in such a systematic way before, even though it offers fascinating connections with the themes of architectural and urban planning. The book ends with an intriguing examination of tents, shacks, towers and other forms of temporary dwellings occupied during demonstrations.
