Fiabe, miti e poesia sono le principali fonti d’ispirazione per Joan Jonas. L’artista newyorkese classe 1936 dopo gli esordi come scultrice, alla fine degli anni Sessanta virò verso il mondo delle performance. Non senza l’influenza della tecnologia, un tema da allora destinato a prendersi sempre più spazio nella società. Alla sua vicenda, che accompagna cinquant’anni di storia dell’arte, il MoMA di New York dedica una grande retrospettiva intitolata Joan Jonas: Good Night Good Morning (fino al 6 luglio 2024, a cura di Ana Janevski, con Lilia Rocio Taboada e Gee Wesley). «» stato entusiasmante riconsiderare opere vecchie e altre più recenti per farle reagire con nuovi contesti», ha commentato l’artista, che ha collaborato con il team curatoriale. «Sono molto felice di avere i miei lavori esposti a New York, dove ho vissuto per la maggior parte della mia vita». Punto di riferimento per l’avanguardia statunitense e per il movimento artistico femminista, Jonas è approdata negli anni recenti a tematiche legate all’ecologia e alla tutela degli ecosistemi naturali. Attraverso installazioni multimediali come Moving Off the Land II (2019), dedicata all’oceano e alle sue creature, e To Touch a Sound (2024), che mette in scena una ricerca sulla consapevolezza delle balene. Entrambe le opere sono state realizzate in collaborazione con lo scienziato David Gruber.  Fairy tales, myths and poetry are the main sources of inspiration for Joan Jonas (1936). The New York artist began her career as a sculptor, and then in the late 1960s turned her attention to the world of performance. Not without the influence of technology, a theme that has since acquired more and more prominence in society. Her story, which accompanies 50 years of art history, is now the subject of a major retrospective at the MoMA entitled Joan Jonas: Good Night Good Morning (until 6 July 2024, curated by Ana Janevski, with Lilia Rocio Taboada and Gee Wesley). “It’s been exciting to reconsider old and newer works as they relate in a new context,” commented the artist, who worked closely with the curatorial team.

I am very happy to have the work on show in New York, where I have lived most of my life.” A point of reference for the American avant-garde and for the feminist artistic movement, Jonas has in recent years tackled issues relating to ecology and the protection of natural ecosystems. Through multimedia installations such as Moving Off the Land II (2019), on oceans and the life in them, and To Touch a Sound (2024), which is researching the awareness of whales.
