PAINTERLY STRATEGEMS AND FURNISHINGS MADE IN ITALY REFORMULATE THE STRUCTURE OF AN APARTMENT IN AN ICONIC THIRTIES BUILDING IN NEW YORK.
This place with its great location at the crossroads of artistic and intellectual life in New York (near the most interesting galleries and the new Whitney) attracted the architect Marco Parmeggiani and his partner Gregory de la Hogue Moran. The building is listed as heritage, so the architect – besides inserting a wooden partition to divide the studio from the kitchen – has relied on perspective: large black bands are placed between the beams to separate the living and dining zones, creating two spaces without altering the structure. «I did something similar in the bedroom, where the iron posts of the bed, designed by Studio Parmeggiani, act as a frame, in the midst of the other parallel and perpendicular lines created by the beams», the architect explains. «I wanted to bring out the structural lines of the house with painted elements in black and white, reflecting my style and my passion for the Bauhaus». Design has a place of honor, from the present (like the 253
Nest sofa by Lissoni for Cassina or the tables by Parmeggiani for Nilufar) and the past, like the D70 sofa by Borsani for Tecno and the dining chairs from the 1950s, adapted with fabric covering designed by Gregory de la Hogue Moran. The two-tone mosaic coffee tables and carpets are from the Labyrinth project by Parmeggiani for Ercole Home. The living area and nighttime zone feature exceptional works of art, including pieces by David Hockney, Tracey Emin and Mimmo Paladino. The enormous chandelier by Robert Haussmann came from the city hall of Lugano, and reached New York by air as oversized luggage.
