Mediterranean at heart

BAMBOO CEILINGS, ROOF TERRACES, A SPECIAL GARDEN. A VILLA ON THE SOUTH COAST OF IBIZA, FOR FREE SPIRITS. The villa shown here is in Porroig, on the island of Ibiza. «It is one of the most beautiful areas of the island, not too far from the airport», says Sofia Barattieri Weinstein, the owner. The overall project is by the architecture firm Archea Associati, and is described by Marco Casamonti, one of the founding partners: «The original buildings

were quite varied, so we have made them more uniform and above all more Mediterranean: the facades are clad in stucco crafted by hand, smoothing the corners, not in white but in a warmer, softer tone. The windows have been enlarged to offer views of the landscape, and we have almost erased indoor-outdoor boundaries. Inside you can see the same materials used in the garden: Cor-ten, hewn stone for the floors, bamboo mats for the ceilings, salvaged wood doors». The roof terrace is large enough to organize dinners for up to 60 guests. The furnishings have been selected by the owner herself. «Many are custom pieces, like the tables by Monica Crotti or Can Castello, a workshop on the island that uses salvaged wood and briar. Other items come from the gallery of Rossana Orlandi in Milan, including the chairs by Piet Hein Eek and the rocking chair by Dirk Vander Kooij in recycled plastic». There are pieces by the Campana Brothers, like the Cabana cabinet and the Corallo chair, produced by Edra. On the walls, a growing collection of art photography, with images by Miles Aldridge, Anja Niemi and Edward Burtynsky, among others.
