A contemporary project rewrites the history of an old chalet in Haute Savoie. Tradition and color
After Le Lavancher, a small settlement on the French slope of Mont Blanc, between Chamonix and Argentière, a handsome stone house with red and white casements comes into view. It is called Le Lou Damou, a chalet almost 100 years old, recently involved in a major restyling project conducted by the Belgian studio am designs, whose residential projects often involve custom-made furnishings (their HQ in Antwerp is also a design-art gallery).
The inspirations were many, generating a unique mix. Contemporary architecture and classical cultures, influences from the Flemish tradition. The structure comes to grips with a new vision, and contrast becomes an added value. The wooden surfaces take on unexpected hues. «The spectacular panorama guided our chromatic choices. The dark walls enhance the surrounding nature, framing the landscape», says the architect Mark Mertens, founder of the studio. The rooms are like monochrome nests, in constant indoor-outdoor dialogue. With few exceptions, all the ingredients have been created for the occasion by am designs.
When not being used by the owners, Le Lou Damou can be rented at the portal . «We like the idea of sharing our projects with external guests, who often become our clients themselves, after their stay». The spacious living area contains a fabric sofa and a long low table (both by am designs), two Spanish Chairs by Børge Mogensen for Fredericia, designed in 1958, and old wooden benches. The fireplace is new, while the old paneling has been recycled. «Each bedroom has its own personality. The kitchen is in pine and Belgian basalt, cut by hand, with a hob by La Cornue». Other exceptional new features include a wine cellar and a spa.
