Evolution of space
A large apartment on Esplanade des Invalides is the new home of the decorator Stéphanie Coutas
The windows in the living room face the linden-lined lawns of Esplanade des Invalides. The gaze alights on the façade by Jules Hardouin-Mansart with its rigorous classicism. But this flat has its own personality, reflecting the style of its owner, the decorator Stéphanie Coutas. «I was looking for a luminous, quiet, elegant setting, a regenerating haven. I live here with my son, and the house reflects my lifestyle. I seldom go out in the evening, so the small studio is like a “home cinema”, though it can also be used as a guestroom». Sliding doors separate the studio, bathroom, bedroom and closet.
When they are open, the space of 224 sqm conveys a sense of fluidity. Asymmetrical arches around the doors and inserts of volcanic stone in the Versailles parquet set a forceful but light pace. To install soundproofing and technological features, everything has been knocked down and redesigned.
The lighting brings out the best in the owner’s art collection: «The sculptures by the Japanese contemporary artist Tadashi Kawamata, next to an African mask in the dining room, are the only works purchased specifically for this flat. The painting by Fabrice Hyber has been with me for over 15 years. The bronze sculpture by Michel Rico was a birthday gift from friends». Besides her passion for art, Stéphanie Coutas is fascinated by fine craftsmanship. Her agency founded in 2005 collaborates with the best metalworkers, painters and decorators, working on private residences, hotels and restaurants. The apartment is a showcase for their skills.
