From Gabriele Muccino to Christopher Nolan, the link between cinema and boats is really strong this year. And boating is not just there to tell, but also to be told
TRAVEL IS A CONCEPT THAT, IN SEA LOVERS, ALMOST NATURALLY EVOKES A BOAT. But this element can also belong to the cinema: what is a movie if not a path that takes us into a new world, different (or sometimes even too similar) to what we usually see, leading us to see reality from a another point of view? Cinema is certainly the art that best interprets all the ideas and peculiarities that are typical of a boat. It is no coincidence that, for the launch of the new Magellano 25 Metri, Azimut Yachts has asked Gabriele Muccino to describe this project in the short film “Open your eyes”. Let’s start with the name: Magellan is not a simple product line, but recalls the Portuguese explorer and navigator who commanded the expedition that would later complete the first circumnavigation of the globe. A timeless story as Azimut’s 25 Metri wants to be. The boat, designed by Vincenzo De Cotiis and Ken Freivokh, embodies an elegance that is not tied to passing fashions, just like those great films that, even if you see them again after years, are always current. Through the images, Muccino tells how art and beauty are able to give birth and nourish passions.
Speaking of boats and cinema in Italy, Riva yachts cannot fail to come to mind. The shots of the Riva motorboats with Anita Ekberg and Sophia Loren have gone around the world, but the Riva have also left their mark on the films themselves. From Dino Risi’s “Il Sorpasso” (1962) to the James Bond saga, the boats of the Engineer have been the protagonists of an incredible number of movies. In such a particular year for the seventh art, it is precisely Riva that dedicates a tribute to the cinema with the short film “Riva in the movie”. The choice of an exceptional actor such as Pierfrancesco Favino, one of the most appreciated Italian actors, testifies to the value that the shipyard attributes to this way of communicating. Favino is filmed while crossing Piazza San Marco in Venice just before dawn, amidst moon reflections that filter through a very evocative fog. Then, the actor climbs on board board an Aquariva, the natural heir of the successful Aquarama, to navigate the waters of the Serenissima and carry a mysterious mahogany object. To find out what it is, however, you’ll have to wait for the end of the short movie. The location chosen to set the film is not accidental given the strong bond existing between the city and the cinema, where the film also made its official debut during the Film Festival, to document the bond that binds Riva and cinema, an exhibition will also be set up at the Gritti Palace which, through extraordinary images, will tell the many films in which Riva boats have played an important role, often as a protagonist, together with national and international stars.
Speaking of today’s cinema intended for the general public, yachts were undoubtedly the protagonists of Christopher Nolan’s latest highly anticipated film, “Tenet”. From the yacht Planet Nine, the 75-meter explorer built by Admiral of The Italian Sea Group to the Maori 50 of Maori Yachts, the boats blend perfectly with the beauty of the scenes and allow extraordinary shots. Even in such a difficult year, this authentic bond emerged along with the search for beauty that, in Italy, has always been common to boating and cinema.
