Sette partecipazioni al Giro del mondo a vela, la vittoria nel 2017 della Coppa America contro gli americani di Oracle alle Bermuda e migliaia di miglia lasciate a poppa di una barca a vela. Ora Grant Dalton, a capo di Emirates Team New Zealand in Coppa America, ha deciso di sperimentare il mare da un altro punto di vista: un catamarano a motore! Stregato anche lui dal fascino dei due scafi, sarà il primo armatore di un Mcconaghy MC63P, l’ultimo multiscafo lanciato da Mcconaghy. Velocità massima? Di molto inferiore a quella di Te Rehutai, nome in lingua maori dell’ac 75, la barca a vela neozelandese alla 36esima edizione della Coppa America, che pare abbia superato i 50 nodi. Il catamarano di Grant Dalton, però, punta su altro. Con un’autonomia fino a 1.500 miglia e una velocità di crociera di 20 nodi, anche il Mcconaghy MC63P sarà dotato di foil, però fissi, per ridurre ulteriormente l’attrito. Insomma, anche un grande velista come Dalton si è dato alle barche a motore, in particolare ai catamarani. Un caso, forse, oppure una prova del fatto che questo genere di multiscafo abbia raggiunto un livello tale da soddisfare anche un uomo di mare con un’esperienza notevole e, quindi, delle esigenze che vanno ben oltre quelle di un normale diportista.

Fascinated by the world of multi-hulls, he will be first owner of a Mcconaghy MC63P, the latest multi-hull yacht launched by Mcconaghy.
Obviously, the top speed is significantly lower than Te Rehutai, the AC75 sailing yacht competing at the 36th America’s Cup, which is said to have exceeded 50 knots. But Grand Dalton’s catamaran looks at something else. Featuring a range up to 1,500 nautical miles and a 20-knot cruising speed, the Mcconaghy MC63P will be equipped with fixed foils to further reduce friction. In short, even a long-experienced sailor like Mr. Grand Dalton has chosen a power catamaran.
A coincidence, perhaps, or proof that this type of multihull has reached a level where it can satisfy even an experienced seaman with requirements far beyond those of a normal yachtsman.
