Fuoribordo: i protagonisti
Outboard: masters of the market
I motori fuoribordo trainano il mercato internazionale. Come sta andando secondo i manager dei principali marchi
Outboard engines are driving the international market. Here is an overview of the situation from the managers of major brands
The proverbial reliability of modern outboards has made them increasingly popular. And despite the stage exit of two important players such as Evinrude (BRP group) and Seven Marine (Volvo group), both of which have been discontinued by their respective groups as a strategic choice, the demand for outboards from May 2020 is skyrocketing.
“Let’s immediately dispel a myth – says Paolo Ilariuzzi, director of the Motorcycle and Marine Division of Suzuki Italy – Although the importance of the North American market is not in question, Europe plays a role of great importance.for Suzuki Marine, Europe is almost half of the global market“. While the U.S. market requires ever more powerful engines, Suzuki is ready to satisfy this request. “Soon – Mr. Ilariuzzi tells us – we will launch a more powerful engine than the 350HP one currently available on the market. For Italy, meanwhile, our focus is on medium-power engines (115-200 HP) which represent the most popular option for all the models for which boat license is required”. Not surprisingly, the technology used for top-of-the-range engines is also being adopted for medium-power models. An example is offered by the new DF 115 and 140 BG which will be supplied without mechanical connection, becoming the first engines (of this power) equipped with drive-by-wire technology. “Among small-power options – continues Mr. Ilariuzzi – the DF40A ARI has been a great success”. The DF40A ARI is a 40 HP engine designed for heavy boats. In short, the ideal solution for those without a license or for the many rental companies that have had to expand their fleets due to the growing demand.
The boom of high-power outboards began in America, especially with Mercury. The American manufacturer has inflamed the beginning of 2021 with the launch of the Mercury Verado V12 600 HP. In addition to being the first twelve-cylinder outboard ever built and the most powerful model in production, it is also a technological giant. The combination of a steering rudder and a sharp design allows the engine to mount on 27-inch centers, so boaters can fit as much power as they need on the transom. The weight of every single engine is approximately 572
kilograms. Equipped with a double counter-rotating propeller, it is designed to push very heavy boats. The two-speed transmission makes easy work of transferring 600 HP to the gearcase. It doles out maximum torque and acceleration in first gear then silently shifts to second for efficient cruising and thrilling top speed. The same technology is available in the Seapro 500 HP version, designed for work applications. “Our goal is the high end of the market – Alessandro Russo, new Division Manager of Yamaha Marine Italia tells us – because, after the 2008 crisis, a new, more demanding and also high-spending clientele was born. The sector has been adapted so much that in 2018 we launched a pioneering engine: the injection V8 XTO 425 HP. This kind of engine has given birth to a new market that has also involved inflatable boats. From 2022, we will also have a new range of V6 225, 250 and 300 HP outboards that will share the same DNA as the XTOS”.
There is also another brand that is progressively expanding its range of medium-power outboards. We’re talking about Yamaha, whose main focus is on integrated systems. A clear example of this new trend comes from the new Helm Master rigging system, whose functions make the boat really “easy” and versatile.
“We manufacture full-custom integrated systems – Mr. Russo explains – Our customers are, for example, fishermen looking for a solution that allows them to fully enjoy their fishing activites, caring as little as possible about navigation in some crucial moments. Or boaters looking for something that can facilitate their docking maneuvers”. The Helm Master system is compatible with all Yamaha outboards from 150HP, equipped with electronic throttle. Over the years, Honda Marine has consolidated its reputation as a very reliable outboard. And this year interesting results are also coming from medium-power engines. “Medium-power engines – explains Honda Marine Sales Manager Francesco Pichelli – are easy to use. Therefore, their are the natural choise of beginners. They are the perfect dimension for anyone looking for an efficient engine. This is the reason for their success. And this is
also the reason why we have decided to launch the BF150 Sporty White in the Italian market”. And, you know, design is a key ingredient to conquer the Italian market. “We are particularly proud of the Sporty White livery – says Mr. Pichelli – because it comes from an all-italian project that aims to satisfy the eye and taste of our customers, who are always very attentive to the elegance and style of their boats”.
Electric outboards, instead, will take more time. Costs and limits are the main obstacles. The problem, in fact, is not the engine itself, but the weight and cost of batteries. Electric solutions are therefore mainly chosen for commercial use, but also by simple boaters, in those areas where the use of an engine of this type is mandatory. This trend has been confirmed by Torqeedo and another proof comes from the development of one of the most powerful outboards in the world, produced by Norwegian Evoy, which promises up to 150 HP. This engine is designed for commercial and rental use. Evoy has announced it is also working on 300 (222 kw) and 450 HP (333 kw) electric motors arriving between 2023 and 2025. Of course, it will be necessary to solve the problem of batteries, both in terms of prices, weights and autonomy. More concrete is the boom experienced by small electric outboards like those of Epropulsion. Electric auxiliary motors are significantly growing. What about diesel outboards? In 2020, Cox Powertrain officially began marketing its first marine outboards. The main intended use of these engines remains commercial, but there are also many recreational applications available, such as those designed for maxi tenders. This segment also attracted the BMW Group which collaborated with Oxe Marine to marinise the 3-liter 6-cylinder bi-turbo for use in the OXE300. This also led to the co-branding of the model. After this result, a preliminary agreement was reached for the study and development of a new diesel outboard. The Yanmar Dtorque 111 50HP is confirmed as one of the most compact diesel outboards in the world, also used for work applications. Main strengths include little maintenance, reliability and safety, also due to the lower flammability of diesel.
