In a flash you are in the Aeolian paradise
WHEN YOU REACH THE NORTH COAST OF SICILY
by land or sea, the Aeolian Islands are there, “at hand”, or rather on your bow, some thirty miles away to the west and east. Yes, because the islands of the mythological god of the wind are scattered across the Tyrrhenian Sea in the shape of a large Y. And right “at the base” of this Y there is a marina that could be the ideal starting point for a cruise to these mythical atolls: the Capo d’orlando Marina (capodorlandomarina. it, +39 0941 964512). It is in a truly strategic position, also on land, because immediately behind it is the uncontaminated territory of the Monti Nebrodi Natural Park. It offers high-level services to yatch
smen who want to discover the Aeolian Islands.
SETTE SORELLE VULCANICHE
SEVEN VOLCANIC SISTERS
They share a common volcanic origin, although each one - Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, Panarea, Stromboli, Filicudi and Alicudi - has its own particular charm. In fact, the Aeolian Islands have a long tradition of tourism: for the clarity of the seabed, the natural environment, the two active volcanoes at Stromboli and Vulcano, the delightful villages and the friendliness of the inhabitants. Visiting them all in one holiday is not easy and takes a lot of time. But it is certainly worth starting with the island closest to Capo D’orlando: the spectacular Vulcano, an island that reserves its “fragrant” welcome for everyone. As you approach, a penetrating smell of sulphur hits your nostrils: it is here, as on Stromboli, that the volcanic activity of the Aeolian Islands continues to manifest itself. There are three craters: Monte Aria, Vulcanello and the Gran Cratere, but only the latter is active. However, the island and its tourists be
~ thanks to the fact that the lush nature and turquoise sea originate from Vulcano’s geological features, and for health. Behind the Porto di Levante, in fact, there is the Pozza dei Fanghi, a natural thermal pool. The most exclusive beach is Cannitello, although perhaps even more beautiful and fascinating is the Spiaggia dell’asino (Donkey Beach): guarded by the village of Gelso, it has black sand. Leaving Vulcano and passing the larger Lipari, here is Salina, the island that is the green lung of
di Pollara, certainly the most fascinating bay. The spectacle that appears to those who drop

13 thousand years ago. And then there is Panarea: it is the smallest and most fashionable, but despite this it is a real gem worth exploring. Don’t miss Calcara beach, with its small underwater fumaroles. (D.D.)
