Antichissima e moderna, schiva e generosa, Matera offre al viaggiatore spunti di straordinaria suggestione. D’arte, di storia, di cultura, folklore e di bon vivre
Matera è tante cose, troppe per riuscire a raccontarle tutte in queste pagine. Matera è il terzo più antico insediamento umano dopo Gerico e Aleppo, di anni ne conta 10mila e di tracce di civiltà diverse ne conserva molte: per il viaggiatore è un magnifico rebus da risolvere. E che dire del suo aspetto, della ragnatela di grotte abitate e di case costruite addosso, di straduzze e scale che si impennano o scendono a scapicollo, i Sassi? Unico al mondo. Poi c’è la Matera sotterranea, città nella città, città d’acqua impensata con una formidabile rete idrica che nell’immensa cisterna del Palombaro Lungo ha la propria apoteosi. Ci sono le testimonianze di una fede forte, sincera ancorché sempre mischiata a una vena popolare: la sontuosa cattedrale, le tante chiese cittadine, le chiese rupestri affrescate come Vangeli illustrati, la Festa della Madonna della Bruna, liturgica e selvaggia insieme. Città-scenografia, Matera, perfetta per il cinema – così l’ha definita Mel Gibson, che qui girò Passion a cui si appresta a dare un sequel –, città-scultura, città d’Oriente e bizantina, con un suo tempo lento che sfida l’impazienza, convulsiva malattia del mondo d’oggi. Città di sapori semplici e gustosissimi a cominciare dal suo pane inimitabile, di gente orgogliosa che il proprio destino ha cercato sempre di sceglierselo, non di subirlo, riuscendo infine a riscattare pure il degrado dei Sassi, a trasformarli in vanto, in meraviglie che fanno meraviglia.
