THE DEEP RELIGIOSITY of Matera and its inhabitants is witnessed by 21 parishes and several churches (some of which have been deconsecrated and are used nowadays for exhibitions and cultural events) that have been carved into the limestone of the Sassi over the centuries with amazing mystical and scenic effects; but also those built above ground in the area that surmounts them, popularly called "al Piano" and in the Sassi themselves, are remarkable as well: their total number, including those of the Murgia National Park, exceeds 150. The former are illustrated in our "discovery itinerary" (The Sassi) between Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano and in the Civita; the latter are described in the following illustrated list, and their position is shown on a map: we have chosen eleven among them, wonderful expressions of sacred architecture from the Romanesque and Baroque periods. Let's start from the Cathedral of Santa Maria della Bruna whose bell tower (52 m) has been overlooking the city since 1270.
