Fotogenica, Matera, ma restia a svelarsi. Il chiaroscuro dei Sassi è troppo “facile” da sentire per non essere complicatissimo da restituire in immagine. Le parti ipogee, le chiese nella roccia, i monumenti vivono di una luce speciale, tremula e pastosa. Difficile. Le foto di Matera veramente belle sono poche, trasmettere la sua aura antichissima e moderna è missione quasi impossibile. Non per Massimo Listri però: il suo obiettivo magistrale ha un feeling immediato con il genius loci più profondo e la Matera che ci mostra in queste immagini è più vera di quella reale perché ne esprime sì la sostanza ma anche l’anima. E lo stesso vale per le altre fotografie di questo straordinario ritratto illustrato della Città dei Sassi.

Matera, a photogenic city but reluctant to reveal itself. The chiaroscuro of the Sassi is so “easy” to feel, and therefore it can be conveyed through images. However, its underground parts, churches in the rock and monuments live in a special, tremulous and pasty light. It’s hard to show them. There are only few really beautiful pictures of Matera, therefore conveying its ancient and modern aura is a quite impossible mission. Not for Massimo Listri though: his masterful camera has an immediate feeling with the deepest genius loci and the city of Matera he shows us here through his images is truer and more genuine than the real one, since not only its substance but also its soul are well expressed. And the same goes for the other photographs of this extraordinary illustrated portrait of the City of the Stones.
