SARNANO, MONTE SAN MARTINO, PENNA S. GIOVANNI, SANT’ANGELO IN PONTANO, GUALDO, SARNANO This 70 km bike route winds through ridges and valleys with endless views that range from the River Tenna to the Adriatic Sea: framed by the Sibillini Mountains, a circular itinerary with continuous ups and downs to be enjoyed calmly, stopping at the villages along the road, true jewels surrounded by nature and witnesses of a millenary history. From the medieval town of Sarnano (539 m), we head towards Rustici and cycle along the ridge to enjoy a view of Mount Vettore up to MONTE SAN MARTINO, perched on a rocky relief: its churches house valuable art pieces by Carlo and Vittore Crivelli, De Magistris and Pagani. Let’s proceed along SP 84 where a steep slope leads us to Penna San Giovanni, on a rocky spur at 672 m. Then let’s return to the route on SP 113 and, a little further, at Villa Pilotti we will find the neo-Gothic church of San Giuseppe decorated with terracottas from the ‘900 (damaged by the earthquake). After crossing the Salino creek, we enter a dense natural park, in the direction of SANT’ANGELO IN PONTANO, a site of Lombard origins set at 473 m and San Nicola da Tolentino’s birthplace. Leaving Sant’Angelo, we take SP 56 at a fountain. A little further, we can enjoy a 360° view on the hills that slope down to the sea: here we can take the road on the ridge leading to the foot of GUALDO (809 m), whose towers stand out on the horizon. Leaving the village, let’s return to the ridge surrounded by the colours of the Marche’s countryside. Then, SP 119 leads us back to Sarnano.
