Una leggenda. Richard D’Oyly Carte lo aprì a Londra nel 1889. Aveva illuminazione elettrica, ascensori, stanze arredate con sfarzo e dotate di sala da bagno. In cucina il superchef Auguste Escoffier, nel teatro le orchestre Savoy Orpheans e Savoy Havana Band, con guest star quali George Gershwin, Frank Sinatra, Lena Horne. Tra gli ospiti Enrico Caruso, Harry Truman, Judy Garland, Babe Ruth, Marilyn Monroe e Barbra Streisand.
A legend. It was opened by Richard D’Oyly Carte in London in 1889. It had electric lighting, elevators, lavishly furnished rooms with bathrooms. In the kitchen, superchef Auguste Escoffier, in the theatre the bands Savoy Orpheans and the Savoy Havana Band, with guest stars including George Gershwin, Frank Sinatra, Lena Horne. Among the guests, Enrico Caruso, Harry Truman, Judy Garland, Babe Ruth, Marilyn Monroe and Barbra Streisand.
THE GRAND HOTEL WAS BORN IN THE 1800S: TO CELEBRATE THE “INIMITABLE” STATUS OF THE WEALTHY CLASS ES IN THE MASS SOCIETY A fundamental phenomenon for the birth of modern tourism, the Grand Hotel was born in the second half of the nineteenth century, established itself both in the city and in the holiday resorts during the Belle Époque and touched the apogee in the Roaring Twenties and even later. Its myth was closely linked to two needs of the leisure class of that time - namely the rich cosmopolitan clients of the “Palaces” told in a beautiful volume by Catherine Donzel for L’Ippocampo publishing house - theorized, respectively, by economist Thorstein Veblen and philosopher Gabriel Tarde: the one, conscious, of being distinguished, and the other, unaware, of being the object of (impossible) imitation. The armored outfit of the hôtellerie arose from here: majestic architecture, pompous furnishings, avantgarde technologies (elevator, heating, radio, even pneumatic tube), the rich schedule of loisirs, from thermal baths to the theatre and the tabarin, haute cuisine, personalized and impeccable service. In short, its “fabulousness”. Those who lived the privilege of staying in those “monuments” left indelible memories behind them: the Adlon in Berlin, the Ritz in Paris, the Savoy in London, the Negresco in Nice and our Principe di Savoia in Milan were really a world apart!

Its current appearance, signed by Cesare Tenca, dates back to 1927. A true icon of the Milanese tourist elite which hosted, among others, Charlie Chaplin, Joséphine Baker, the Aga Khan, Aristotle Onassis, Evita Perón, Maria Callas, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Lady Gaga and George Clooney.
HOTEL NEGRESCO
Voluto da Henri Negresco progettato da Édouard-Jean Niermans, arredato da Paul Dumas, fu inaugurato nel 1913 sulla promenade des Anglais a Nizza. Amato dai ricchissimi e prediletto dalla famiglia Rockfeller, era dotato di una grande hall ellittica per spettacoli, di posta pneumatica e di aspirazione centralizzata per la pulizia delle camere.
Wanted by Henri Negresco, designed by Édouard-Jean Niermans and furnished by Paul Dumas, it was inaugurated on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice in 1913. Loved by very rich people and favored by the Rockfeller family, it was equipped with an elliptical grand hall for shows, pneumatic tube and centralized suction for room cleaning.
HOTEL RITZ
César Ritz lo inaugurò a Parigi nel 1898, facendone un sinonimo di opulenza, servizio raffinato, spettacolo e cibi squisiti (confezionati da Escoffier, il re dei cuochi). Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Proust e la Garbo passarono di qui. Coco Chanel vi abitò per più di 30 anni.
César Ritz inaugurated it in Paris in 1898, making it a synonym of opulence, refined service, entertainment and exquisite food (created by Escoffier, the king of cooks). Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Proust and Greta Garbo stayed here. Coco Chanel lived here for over 30 years.
