Successi marchigiani
Successful stories from Marche.
GREAT AMBITIONS
Elica, a company specialized in design hoods, turns 50. President FRANCESCO CASOLI tells firsthand how he conquered the world starting from Fa
briano. “Fabriano is known worldwide for the production of paper, but thanks to the work and intuition of some entrepreneurs, first of all Vittorio Merloni, from the Sixties onwards it has also become a famous pole for household appliances. He lit the fuse, but then, many others took that path, each making their own innovative contribution to the sector. Among these, my father Ermanno Casoli, a man of great ingenuity and foresight: the very name of the company, Elica, modern and allusive without being taken for granted, was invented by him. And it was 1970! Over the years, it has proved perfect and understandable in all languages. Today, we export to all continents, with 2,900 catalog references diversified by country. Since Chinese food needs an extractor hood other than the United States, and so on. A world all to discover, that of our design hoods, as well as the Marche. I particularly love the hinterland: I often take my guests to the Frasassi Caves, and every time I am amazed at their beauty. I go to Acqualagna to enjoy truffle delicacies; I visit villages like Terra San Quirico to immerse myself in the silence of narrow streets and alleys overlooking landscapes that look like paintings”.
■ CITIZEN OF THE WORLD With the advice of globetrotter CATERINA GAROFOLI, Communication and Reception Manager of the Garofoli Winery, we discover archaeological sites and “Mystery Tours”.
“The motto with which my mother brought me up says: one less dress but one more trip! Therefore, from my 18 to 28 years, I travelled around the world - as our wines do today, since they are present in over 50 countries - but then, back in my Marche, I fell in love with it. Today I’m 42 years old and mother of two 6-year-old twins, I organize trips in the surroundings for our two companies, which since 1871 have reached 50 hectares among Verdicchio, Rosso Conero and Rosso Piceno. The one is located between Loreto and Castelfidardo, between the sacred of the Sanctuary and the profane of the accordion village, and the other between Montecarotto and Serra de’ Conti, two delightful medieval villages. I’ve recently discovered Fano: the city has a beautiful historic centre, with important Roman remains and Museo del Balì, a small museum of science and technology that I recommend even to adults. The gastronomic must-stop is at Trattoria Peppa for its exceptional passatelli, and you’ll have a perfect day. Montelupone is a well-restored village, whose inhabitants have invented a fun way to make it known: the Mystery Tours, a mix of history and legends told by costumed characters. And even here, the table offers us the Montelupone artichokes, Slow Food presidium”.
PLAYING IS A SERIOUS THING Words by Mario Clementoni, who in 1963 started running today’s global giant. But with head and heart firmly in Recanati. CEO Giovanni CLEMEN
TONI tells us about this. “As a lover of travel and flavors, I must recommend my Recanati, a historic village nestled on the rolling hills of Le Marche with a special look on L’Infinito, but which also gave birth to Beniamino Gigli, whose house-museum can be visited. A fertile territory rich in art, creativity and culture, where know-how becomes industry and toys and games are precious tools for the growth of our children. Not far from here, there is an ideal place for a family holiday, the Conero Riviera with its Regional Park, a true natural paradise overlooking the sea. I spend my free time there, between long walks in the green and enchanting beaches even in winter, which preserves something wild and rustic. Although the business I’m running is now global, with over 80 importing countries of a good part of the over 28 million games and toys sold every year, we remain proudly rooted in our territory: the company, founded in 1963 by Mario and Matilde Clementoni, still realizes today 80% of total production in the Recanati factory, which employs 600 employees. Among these, 70 young researchers that allow us to always propose up-to-date brand-new items”.
WALKING IN THE VINEYARD In Civitanova Marche and surroundings, led by SALINA FERRETTI, CEO of the Falc Group, which today exports not only footwear but also quality wines. With the extra touch by Masterchef Simone
Scipione. “Since 1982, Falc has been synonymous with quality footwear, for children, with the Falcotto and Naturino brands, and for men and women, with Voile Blanche and collaborations with important brands like Moschino. However, our bond with the territory doesn’t stop there: in 2004, on the hills above Civitanova Marche, we started a very different entrepreneurial adventure, with the opening of the Fontezoppa Wineries, to which the Locanda was also added. Few rooms to spend a relaxing weekend, enjoy our fine wines, including black Vernaccia, and a cuisine that enhances traditional flavours, also thanks to the talent of Simone Scipione, winner of Masterchef 2018 but, above all, from the Marche region, Montecosaro, in the Macerata area. Wine is also mentioned in Abbadia di Fiastra Nature Reserve, one of my favorite places in the Marches. In addition to the splendid Cistercian abbey, perfectly preserved, the reserve houses the Museum of Rural Life, the Archaeological Museum and the Wine Museum. A way to immerse yourself in silence and in the purest nature, as well as in Monti Sibillini National Park, to be explored by hiking, mountain biking or skiing”.
No Planet B! ■
WHEN LUXURY IS ECO
Precious leather and craftsmanship are the pride of CLAUDIA ORCIANI, Commercial Director of the luxury bag brand head
quartered in Fano. The Orciani company was born in 1979 thanks to the passion of my father Claudio, who knew how to give birth to a new artisan knowledge, that know-how that still makes our creations unique today. Thanks to research and innovation, we have become the company we are today, with loyal distribution in Italy and a constant push towards foreign markets, from Europe to America. Versatility and refined sensuality in the softness of shape and design and in the tactility of the material, leather, are our distinctive notes. A winning mix that also reflects a bit the land where the company was born and has grown: the Marches, land of coexistence of Nature and Art (yes, with capital letters!). From the hills of Leopardi’s Infinito in Recanati to the Ducal Palace of Urbino, from the Sibillini Mountains to the beaches of Numana and Sirolo, to go up to the bay of Portonovo and enjoy the cuisine by Moreno Cedroni. Orciani, headquartered in Fano, is in perfect harmony with its land, which we are trying to preserve by actively marrying the cause of sustainability. We have adopted photovoltaic and geothermal solutions, we mostly use “eco” materials and focus on reducing the environmental impact of our production processes. No Planet B!”.
■ THE GARAGE OF MIRACLES The successful story of a small artisan workshop in Treia, today leader in the furniture sector, tells a lot about the spirit of Le Marche. And of Fabio Giulanelli, CEO of LUBE GROUP. “Many entrepreneurial stories of the twentieth century began in a garage and then made important steps, but Lube was born in Treia, a village of a few thousand inhabitants in the province of Macerata, and not in Silicon Valley or Los Angeles. And in 1967. After starting as a small artisan laboratory founded by two friends, today Lube boasts a state-of-the-art factory of 150,000 square meters, powered by a photovoltaic system with over 15,000 panels, employs 650 employees who produce 75,000 kitchens every year, reaching 93 countries worldwide. Investments in technology and computerization are the cornerstones of all our strategic decisions, but we never forget that we owe much of our success to the DNA of Le Marche’s people, and in particular of the Macerata furniture district, to the tradition of quality craftsmanship and the cult of beauty. Treia, for example, is a small treasure chest of art, the result of a succession of various dominations: Picenes, Sabines, Romans, Visigoths, Saracens, and then the Sforza and the Vatican. Everything can be found in the incunabula and in the works preserved at the Accademia Georgica, unfortunately now closed due to post-earthquake restorations”. ◆
■ LOCAL IS BETTER Fresh pasta made in Ancona, dry pasta made in Matelica. From the two LUCIANA MOSCONI pasta factories, only 100% Marche gourmandise. To be enjoyed with the suggestions by Marcello Pennazzi, CEO of the Group. “Discovering the authenticity of Luciana Mosconi’s pasta is not only an extraordinary gastronomic experience, but it is also an opportunity to enjoy the artistic and landscape wonders of the Marche region. Among the iconic places of our territory, I suggest the wonderful beach of the Two Sisters in Sirolo, the poignant bay of Portonovo, celebrated by the Sunday Times, the magical and majestic Frasassi Caves, and the city of Ancona, of which I particularly love the rocky Passetto beach, located in the town centre. Here is one of the two pasta factories of Luciana Mosconi Group, dedicated to the production of fresh pasta, which houses Piccolo Negozio della Pasta, where you can buy specialties made with durum wheat semolina and 100% Italian fresh eggs and filled with absolute excellence: beef from Italian farms, pork from Le Marche, ricotta cheese from the plateau of Colfiorito... without any addition of glutamate, breadcrumbs, artificial flavors and preservatives. In Matelica we instead produce dry pasta, including the new “E sei nelle Marche, Filiera 100% Marchigiana” egg pasta line, created to support local farmers and breeders, with durum wheat semolina and fresh eggs from free range hens, all 100% from the Marches”.
