La pace interiore
Una personalità internazionale della scienza, l’astrofisica MARICA BRANCHESI, spiega perché la sua terra, Urbino, le colline, le persone e la bellezza sono necessarie
Astrofisica di fama mondiale, Marica Branchesi è una star del mondo scientifico, nel 2018 è stata inserita nella lista delle 100 persone più influenti al mondo del Time. Originaria di Urbino, oggi vive e lavora a L’Aquila, ma non perde occasione per tornare nella sua terra.
Com’è oggi il suo rapporto con i luoghi dove è cresciuta?
«Sono una persona molto curiosa, mi piacciono le novità e amo viaggiare, ma Urbino per me è casa, ci torno ogni volta che posso. Le colline, la genuinità delle persone e dei prodotti della terra ristabiliscono la pace interiore. Tutto il territorio circostante racconta la ricchezza della storia». Cos’ha di speciale Urbino? «Senza dubbio la bellezza, conservata come in pochi altri posti al mondo. Ma anche la cultura: durante il Rinascimento a Palazzo Ducale avevano capito l’importanza di aprirsi alla conoscenza e alle diversità, discipline differenti come arte e scienza convivevano perfettamente».
C’è un luogo a cui è più legata? «Ce ne sono molti, ma la Pieve di San Cassiano in Castelcavallino occupa un posto speciale. Quando dovevo studiare per gli esami più complicati mi rifugiavo nel boschetto dietro alla chiesa per trovare un po’ di quiete e concentrazione».
La sua terra ha influenzato il suo percorso? «Sicuramente, i miei primi cieli stellati li ho visti dalle colline intorno a casa e ricordo con piacere la famosa nevicata del 2012: un mese surreale, chiusa in casa a Urbino, durante il quale ho scritto un progetto che mi ha cambiato la vita». ■

Urbino is home to me, I go back whenever I can. The hills, the genuineness of people and the products of the earth restore inner peace. The whole surrounding territory tells the richness of history”. What
is special about Urbino? “Without any doubt beauty, as well preserved as in few other places in the world. But even culture: at Palazzo Ducale in the Renaissance, people understood the importance of opening up to knowledge and diversity, and different disciplines such as art and science coexisted perfectly”. Is there a place to
which you are most attached? “There are many places, but Pieve di San Cassiano in Castelcavallino deserves a special place in my heart. When I had to study the most complicated exams, I used to take refuge in the grove behind the church, to find some peace and concentration”. Did
your land influence your career? “Of course, I saw my first starry skies from the hills around my home and I remember with pleasure the famous snowfall in 2012: a surreal month when, cooped up in my home in Urbino, I wrote a project that changed my life”.
