DIVIA THANI CNT India

-

I’m dreaming of Kashmir. The sublime beauty of its mountains, shrouded in fat, white clouds against a blue sky; its lakes; almond and chinar trees; scented gardens of tulips and roses; intricate Mughal architecture. I’d be staying on a houseboat, buying lac bangles and fresh greens. And I’d wander to Suffering Moses, where Kashmiri craft finds an exquisite home. A maze of treasures – papier-mâché, textile and wood masterpieces, everything handcarved, hand-painted, handwoven locally. The store goes back over 100 years, and the owners trace their roots to the Persian artisans who arrived here with Shah-e-Hamadan. Like everything else in this place, beauty and tragedy collide. It has no Facebook page or Instagram account, so all they can do is hope that, like me, you’ll plan a trip here, and help preserve a special part of the world’s history.
